

Robert Newton Gowing, 93, of Flagler Beach, Florida, passed away on June 29, 2018 at Florida Hospital Flagler. He was born April 18, 1925 in Franklin, Massachusetts to the late Albert Charles Gowing and Jeanette Newton Shaw. Robert proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII in the European Theatre. After being honorably discharged, he married Bette Lucille Johnson in 1948 and completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1949. Robert served his entire career as an electrical engineer for the New England Electric System and was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Holden, Massachusetts. Retiring in 1990, he and his wife moved to Flagler Beach the following year. He attended Flagler Beach United Methodist Church, was a member of local sportsman’s clubs, and was a staunch supporter of the National Rifle Association. Robert was a talented improvised jazz pianist and an accomplished target shooter. He was preceded in death by his wife Bette L. Gowing in 2014, and his sister Barbara Benson in 2008. Survivors include his sons, John Gowing of Melbourne, FL; Scott Gowing of North Potomac, MD; sister, Carolyn Lockett of Venice, FL; and grandchildren, Sarah and Dana Gowing. Donations in his memory may be made to the charity of your choice. A celebration of his life will be held in the near future at the Nautilus Condominium. Arrangements are in the care and trust of Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens.
