Tom was born in 1952 in Dayton, Ohio, to his loving parents, Martin and Shirley Tiefert. He graduated from Chaminade High School in 1970 and continued his studies at Ohio State University. He went on to build a distinguished 40-plus-year career as a civil engineer, dedicating his professional life to designing municipal wastewater treatment facilities.
In 1980, he married the love of his life, Karen, and together they raised three beautiful daughters. After retiring, he was able to develop his artistic talents and pursue a plethora of hobbies—crafting model train sets, playing board games, following the Cincinnati Reds, and exploring countless other interests.
After completing his college studies, Tom’s life took a meaningful turn when he began studying the Bible. In 1980, he was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. His faith became a defining part of his life. He devoted countless hours to helping others learn about their Creator, including two extended volunteer trips to Albania. He also spent time helping those who were incarcerated to find comfort and guidance through the Scriptures.
What made Tom unique was his enthusiasm for life, and it's probably safe to say he did nothing halfheartedly. A lifelong learner and avid reader, he was always eager to explore new ideas. He loved the outdoors and seeing Tom on a bike was a familiar sight. He enjoyed camping, hiking, fishing, baseball and pickleball. Many friends also fondly remember the ballgames he organized. Above all, he was devoted to his family and took pride in being a loving husband, father, and brother.
Tom is survived by his wife of 46 years, Karen; his three daughters Hilary, Abigail (Jonathan), and Erika (Besmir); three brothers and one sister. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
Tom was characterized by a strong sense of right and wrong, shaped by his study of the Bible and his desire to live by divine principles. He cared deeply about others, often giving attention to those who might otherwise be overlooked. His warm smile, quick wit and spontaneous humor brought laughter to many. He never lacked a topic to discuss with passion, and he never met a stranger. All of these things about him will be sorely missed and he leaves a hole in our hearts.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 14 at 3:30 pm (EDT) at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, located at 1970 Old Kings Road, Unit A, Palm Coast, FL 32164. A private dinner will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the worldwide work and humanitarian activities of Jehovah’s Witnesses at donate.jw.org.
