Joseph Liwak Jr.

LIWAK, JOSEPH Jr. age 85 of Flushing, MI died Thursday, March 23, 2017 at McLaren Hospital Flint. Joe was born April 5, 1931 in Flint, MI son of Joseph Sr. and Cecelia (Lewicki) Liwak. Joe was a 1949 graduate of Flint Northern High School, attended Flint Jr. College and completed his education at Michigan State. He was a member of Dom Polski Polish Dancing Ensemble where he met his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Carto. They were married August 22, 1953, at All Saints Catholic Church and have remained members ever since. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his service, he ws employed by General Motors until his retirement in 1987 from GM Parts and Service. As a life long member of the Polish Legion of America Veterans, Post #8 he held many positions at the Local, State and National levels. As National Commander from 1994 to 1996 he had the honor of giving the Veteran's Address at Arlington National Cemetery on Veteran’s Day 1996 along with President Clinton. Joe was a certified VA Service Officer assisting veterans and their families. He served as the PLAV Dept. Service Director for 20 years. Joe volunteered at the Saginaw VA Medical Center and was also a member of the American Legion #64. Joseph is survived by his wife Elizabeth, daughter Nancy Moore, son Craig and fiance Jean Harkins and son Brian; grandchildren Jarret Moore, Amanda (Owen) Rodriguez, Veronica (Chip) Buckley, Jenna Liwak and Ryan Liwak. Mr. Liwak was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Deborah and son-in-law, Stephen Cindric and by his grandson, Aaron Moore. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 Thursday, March 30, 2017 at All Saints Catholic Church, G-4063 W. Pierson Rd., Flint, MI. Monsignor Richard Groshek officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. and Wednesday from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. with a PLAV Service at 6:30 P.M. and a Rosary being prayed at 7:00 P.M.
