Alina was born on January 30, 1939, in Havana, Cuba, where she spent the first chapter of her life. She loved Havana. She danced, she had an active social life, she loved the ocean, and she embraced the city with an energy and joy that those who knew her in those years never forgot.
In 1968, she came to the United States and made her home in Flushing, New York, where she would live for more than fifty years. She arrived with excitement and optimism, eager to build a new life, and she built it on her own terms. She grew to love her adopted country and often marveled at all that America had to offer. It was in New York that she met Luis Ramos, and together they built a family. Their son Louis was born, and she gave herself over to raising him. She believed deeply in the power of education and pushed him to work hard and reach his potential. That was how she showed her love.
Alina believed in the importance of taking care of herself, eating well and staying active, because she understood that how you tend to yourself matters. She also knew how to be still. She loved sitting at the park, the beach, or a coffee shop, watching the world and thinking about life. Beneath her vibrant spirit was a contemplative soul. She had a taste for beautiful things, for good food, for fine restaurants, and above all for the people she loved gathered around the same table.
Family was the center of her life. She cared for her parents, Patria and Jose Diaz, with deep devotion. She loved her grandchildren without reservation and never missed an opportunity to brag about them. Her greatest happiness was simply being with them.
Alina was predeceased by her parents, Patria and Jose Diaz, and her siblings, Dolores Fernandez and Jose Millan. She is survived by her son, Louis Ramos, and his wife, Michelle Ramos; her grandchildren, Matthew, Henry, and Anna Ramos; her former husband and cherished friend, Luis Ramos, who cared for her lovingly in her final years.
A lifelong Catholic, her faith was a quiet but steady presence throughout her life.
