October 27, 1934 - June 29, 2021
Gang Bick “Bicky” Hom was born in Canton Province, China (today referred to as Guangdong). He was the second oldest child of Chui Sep Hom and Sun Kim Wong. Bick grew up with five sisters and spent his early childhood caring for his mother and sisters during World War II, as his father was in Butte, Montana earning a living for his family.
In 1950 when Bick was 16 years old, he moved from China to the United States where he attended and graduated from Seward Park High School in New York City. On the weekends he worked in a restaurant, waiting on tables and washing dishes. After high school, he enlisted into the US Army to serve in the Korean War. He started basic training at Fort Dix in New Jersey and then onto Little Rock, Arkansas where he learned to be an artilleryman. From there, he was sent to Korea where he served 16 months. Bick learned to speak English from his fellow soldiers.
While on leave, he went to Hong Kong to meet Wai Ling Lee, who later became his wife. After they were married in 1960, they moved to an apartment on 14th Street in Manhattan. Later, they moved to Queens, New York where they raised three children.
Bick worked for many years for the Wong family at their restaurants Wong’s Garden in Laurelton, Queens and The Palace of Wong in Rockville Centre, Long Island. He finally retired at the age of 74 in 2009.
Bick enjoyed watching football (J-E-T-S, Jets! Jets! Jets), baseball, hockey, World War II films, playing Mahjong and gardening. His greatest joy in life was spending quality time with his grandchildren.
Bick is survived by his wife, Wai Ling, his three children, their spouses and his five grandchildren.
