I ran into a colleague today who told me of Joe's passing. I was very upset to hear that. I was connected with him on Linked in and when I switched jobs last year, he reached out. He was a wonderful guy, great attorney and a real gentlemen. We had a case as co-defendants years back and I really enjoyed the time we were able to spend together. I will pray for him and his family.  I am sure he is missed but I am sure he is in heaven.

I'm so sorry to know of Joe's passing. Don, Therese and Peter are in my thoughts and prayers.  Please take some comfort in knowing that Joe has been reunited in heaven with his parents and grandparents, Don and Liz.  So many childhood memories of Jones Beach outings and St. Andrews events.  Holiday occasions especially of us all trick or treating together were always special.  Joe will always be remembered for his fun loving spirit.  God rest his soul in peace.

I met Joe many years ago when we were representing clients in the same contentious construction defect matter.   We had some common interests in the defense and our clients were insured by the same carrier, Hanover, who has been a great client for both of us, so we ended up collaborating quite a bit.  Since then, we had a number of cases together and while we did not get together socially, we had many extended conversations about our personal lives and careers over the years, and I considered him a friend.  Joe was a smart, gracious and honorable man, and a gentleman lawyer.  He will be missed.  To his family, I extend my deepest condolences.

For several years Joe lived just down the street fron me, but we never knew each other.   Over the last few years I had several cases with Joe and I found him to be a a great attorney to work with.  He was amiable and since we often represented similarly situated clients, he was always a good sounding board on our cases.   More importantly, I found Joe to just be an overall great person to talk to.     My heart goes out to his son and all of his family.  Rest in Peace Joe.  You will be missed!

I met Joe in March 2023 when I joined Hall Booth Smith from another firm. This loss has rocked me, so I can only imagine what his family and close friends are enduring. Joe was full of life and such a passionate person. We immediately hit it off at a conference when I first joined HBS. He welcomed me into the Construction group and always found time to check in and ensure I was doing well. He extended himself to everyone that way and more. He also lifted everyone around him and ensured he helped everyone whenever and however he could. We just spoke before he left for the Perrins conference about marketing initiatives, new clients, and strategies for work. But before we talked shop, he always asked me how I was doing, about my family, and if I needed anything. I never needed anything, but it never stopped him from asking. Joe greatly impacted my life and my intentionality with others in such a short time. I found it incredible how kind he was to me in March as a stranger and the continuity of his kindness since. He was the epitome of a leader, and I will ensure I subscribe to how he extended himself to colleagues and people generally. I will miss you, Joe. I will miss the random calls and shop talk. I will miss having such a determined and passionate colleague a phone call away.  May God Bless your family and loved ones.

Sending comfort and my deepest condolences to all of Joe's friends and family. I had the pleasure of working with Joe over the past year and a half, and like many others here, time made no difference in knowing him. He was never too busy for anyone, and I will treasure the many phone calls and voicemails our team shared with him. 

Recently, Joe and his family purchased 8 tickets to the UAB vs. UGA game in Athens, GA from my father, and looking back, I am so happy they were able to share that wonderful weekend together.

We at HBS were so lucky to have met and worked with Joe! His energetic spirit and hard work was contagious. He was such a good leader for our construction team, always encouraging and helping others aiming to succeed! We always joked about how Joe loved to call us for the smallest thing that most people would email about but now we are so grateful for all the calls and memories. Continued prayers for his whole family, may the memories keep your hearts full on the hardest of days!

Too many great Joe stories but with the horror of 9/11, I was in NJ and worried about the safety of everyone in our NY office. At first it was impossible to get through on the phone. Finally I got through and Joe answered the phone. He assured me not to worry and stated that he was in charge. Joe was always in charge and ready to take on any challenge, always with a smile on his face. 

P.J., I never met you but I know you. I never met a father who was so dedicated to his son and your accomplishments. You made him so proud and you will certainly continue to do so.

I’ve only had the pleasure of knowing Joe for the last four years.  Joe always had a big heart towards his support staff, always recognizing our hard work and praised us to all.  I will miss his monster Christmas cookies and the pies he would always get us at Thanksgiving, his jokes and don’t leave any dishes in the sink, lol! And, “if it’s not in writing, it doesn’t exist”!  Joe loved his work family!  He was our awesome leader and will be our Skipper forever!  My heart felt condolences to his family.

I worked with Joe for over 20 years. He was an excellent attorney and a true friend. Joe and I used to have a regular racquetball game at the gym near our office in downtown NYC. We both competed intensely, but always had great fun and laughs. Another great memory with Joe was every year on the day of the firm holiday party, we would go to the local bar to have a drink and toast to our kids. Joe also had a great sense of humor and we enjoyed discussing our sports teams. Joe was an amazing father and always told me how proud he was of his son PJ's accomplishments. I will miss him dearly and I send my condolences to PJ and Joe's extended family.

I first had the pleasure of being involved with Joe as a co-defendant in a very large lawsuit about 20 years ago.  He was bright and energetic, but more important to me he was a good guy and a pleasure to deal with.  I recall him talking often about his son, and over the years we would trade stories about the joys of fatherhood.

I knew Joe for  more than 20 years going back to our days as associates at Callan Regenstreich Koster & Brady. We were colleagues and friends while at the firm and its subsequent iterations. We remained friends and colleagues after we moved on with our careers often sharing opinions, experts and networking.  

Joe was first and foremost a family man. PJ was always the light of his life who brought more pride and joy to Joe than can be  adequately expressed. Joe proudly shared PJs accomplishments and successes in school, on the sports fields and in the real world after his graduation. PJ, I am certain that Joe will always be with you watching from above.He will always be supporting you in everything you do.

Joe was always full of life. He was an avid golfer and regularly went to the gym.  Joe enjoyed a good joke and had a great sense of humor. I feel compelled to share a golf story that I fondly remember.   15-20 years ago. Joe and I joined Paul Callan and Bill Brennan at Ridgewood Country Club. We were on the first hole of what I believe was the Center 9 hole course. The tee shot required a carry over water. None of us had previously played with Joe but he frequently told us about is excellent skills and scores. Joe hit his first shot short and into the water.  Since it was the first hole, he took a breakfast ball/mulligan and promptly deposited it into the water but shorter than his first shot. Bill , without hesitation and with a straight face, looked at Joe and said "I'd play the first one." We all laughed and enjoyed our day and each other's company out of the office. 

I am deeply saddened by Joe's early departure. I will miss our calls, our meetings at conferences and our dinners together. The world lost a good sole way too early. I trust Joe is in a better place.

I was very sad and shocked to hear this.  I worked with Joe at CKBB for many years and new him very well.  He was a wonderful person and a good friend.  He always made you smile and was always willing to help with anything.   There were many times that I had to go to Joe for help at work and he always made time for me.   Joe was some of our "go to" person.  He sometimes brought his son PJ to work with him and we called him "little Joe" because he looks like his dad.  Joe loved his son so very much and talked about him a lot.  I send my deepest sympathy to his son and prayers that he can get through this. Joe will be deeply missed.  My condolences to his son PJ and his entire family.

I met Joe years ago at RWJ. We were part of the 5 am crew who quickly became like family.  Joe had a huge heart and always looked to put a smile on your face. Even at that early hour he was chatty, smiling and always making his rounds to ensure he said hello to all the regulars. 

After COVID closed the gym and we went our separate ways, we always found the time to share a drink or dinner or a chat about what was going on in our lives. Every single time we spoke he beamed when talking about you, PJ. He was so proud of your accomplishments and beyond proud to call you his son and friend.  

Joe was the type of guy you wanted in your corner. He was loyal, kind, loving and a true gentleman.  I will miss his smile, his friendship and his huge heart. Until we meet again, my friend. Rest easy. XO

Joe was at first my client man years ago, but most importantly he was, and always will be my friend. I would like to share a few thoughts about Joe both professionally and personally.

I was so fortunate to spend time with Joe just last week in New Orleans.  We had a wonderful dinner the first night and hung out the next day. He led a panel discussion where he once again demonstrated his extensive knowledge of construction defect litigation, delivered in his charming and engaging style. After the presentation several attendees and colleagues commented on the outstanding  content and presentation led by Joe. To all who knew him professionally he was very respected as  a great lawyer, a straight shooter, and always brought his A game. I was always impressed by how Joe could see things others often missed, and worked to solve problems by bringing people together in positive engagements. But if that didn't work, he could be hell on wheels to his adversaries and everyone had better get out of the way!!!  

To his friends he was always the first to step up with an offer to help, a word of encouragement, or just lend an ear. He loved a good joke, even at his own expense.  And boy, could Joe tell a story!  His loyalty and passion for his work and family and friends was always present. Joe spoke often  with such pride about his son PJ and it was so clear that he was the brightest star in Joes Orbit.

I has the privilege of working with Joe as an expert for the past 13 years.  We first met on the opposite sides of a large litigation. From that first encounter it was so clear that Joe was a great attorney who commanded  respect from the judiciary and hi colleagues on both sides. Soon after that case settled Joe and I (and others in my company) starred working together on all kinds of cases. We quickly became friends and comrades outside work. 

I will always have wonderful memories of my friend, and proud to have known him. You are in our hearts and prayers Joe. R.I.P.

I knew your Dad for many years while serving as a Mediator on many of his cases.  Joe was always prepared, professional and someone who I was proud to call a friend.  We spoke of our children often and I know how proud he was of you. I hope that over the years your memories of him will sustain you in your moments of sadness.   May he rest in peace

I have had the privilege over the last 8 years to work on many different cases with Joe.  He was a master strategist and negotiator, but more than that, he was a wonderful person.  During the holidays,  he drove from New Jersey to Hartford, CT just to have a holiday lunch with me and my teammates.  He was also my mentor, readily sharing his wisdom on leadership.  We enjoyed talking about meditation as well.  There have been many times - in many different aspects of my life - where I have asked myself, What would Joe do in this situation?  How would he approach this?  What would he say, and how would he say it?  I will continue his legacy in my own small way by living life to the fullest and looking to him as a role model and guide.  Joe, you left us way, way too soon and too suddenly.  The world isn't the same without you.  I give my deepest condolences to Joe's friends, family, and colleagues.   I want you to know that there are a lot of people like me - far and wide - who admire Joe and will always remember him fondly.

I worked with Joe many years ago at CKBB - he was always happy and positive... then i ran into him at the RWJ  gym a few years ago and was on a case with him too.  He always chatted me up at 5am - energetic and friendly - itching to talk about our construction case by the free weights....  I just thought about him the other morning  while at the gym... i thought... i wonder where joe is... havent seen him in a while..... So sad to hear of his passing. Gone too soon. It is clear he was loved by many.... may his memory live on.

My sincere condolences. Joe and I had only been working together a few months and had never met in person, yet he left an impression on me that will not be forgotten.

I'm an attorney practicing in California and I only met Joe once- virtually- about 3 months ago. A mutual client asked Joe to call me about a case pending in California that I'm handling. They had asked for his opinion on the case; and asked that he speak with me about it and report back to them. Not an easy task to perform; and one that Joe did with both graciousness and transparency. He was smart and insightful; we talked trial strategy and themes to develop in the case.

We talked for about an hour and I believe, developed a mutual respect. I asked him where he resided, and he told me in New Jersey; I told him I would look him up when I was in the city and take him out to dinner. He said he would do the same when he got out to LA. I'm sorry that didn't happen.

To his son Peter: I'm sure you know this, but I wrote this to express  what a standup guy your dad was. In the short conversation we had, I knew he was an 'old school' guy; someone who said what he meant, was direct in his approach, and respectful of others. In short, a 'good dude,' as we sometimes say out here in California. I wish the world had more Joe Herbert's. I was certainly glad to have met him.

Joe and I shared a client in common and had many cases together over the years.  My partners and I are shocked and saddened to learn of his passing.  He was a smart lawyer and a good man.  I enjoyed our many interactions over the years.  I'll remember the many phone conversations on one case in particular, talking about the case, family, life, etc.  Just a really good guy that will really be missed.  May Joe rest in peace.

He was a talented lawyer and generous with his insights and encouragement as I got to learn about construction defect law. I worked with Joe in my very early 20’s at CKBB.  He was always there anytime I needed him for anything personal or work related. He always did so with a smile on his face and with positive reassurance. He always put a smile on my face and I never forgot that or him during my journey in life. Joe was such a great guy. I worked with him at Hall Booth Smith.  We only ever met virtually as I worked in Florida, but he was so supportive, positive, and encouraging.  He will be missed.

I spent some quality time with Joe in New Orleans last week where, as my law partner, i got to know his "personal" side.  Joe was an excellent friend, smart attorney, and was so proud of PJ's college and professional accomplishments.  My condolences to Joe's family.
