Paul attended Adelphi College and was graduated in June 1953, at which time he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a midshipman. He graduated as an Ensign and he received his wings in October 1954. He served as a pilot for eight years and earned the rank of Lieutenant Senior Grade. He pursued Anti Submarine Warfare by enlisting in the Lighter-Than-Air squadron stationed in Weeksville, North Carolina, where he was sent out in search of Soviet Union submarines detected off the Atlantic coast. Paul liked to say, “In World War II no allied ship in a convoy was ever sunk while a U.S. Navy airship was patrolling in the same area.”
Paul flew several types of airplanes – including long range bombers, light bombers from aircraft carriers, and fighter planes – mainly the P2V Neptune, PB4Y-2 Privateer, JD Invader, and AD-4 Skyraider. He additionally flew the K-class ZSG-4K Goodyear blimp for Anti Submarine Warfare.
In the 1960s Paul worked at such advertising agencies as Filmways, SSC&B, and Ogilvy & Mather in New York City. He produced commercials for television and radio. Some of his accounts included S&H Green Stamps, Lipton Tea, and the Shell Oil Company, to name a few. His favorite commercials were for Super Shell Gasoline With Platformate. His advertising career included many trips to Europe to such places as Paris, London, Milan, and Munich, to name a few; the highlight of which was his shooting a commercial at the famous racetrack in Monza, outside of Milan, Italy.
