From a very early age, Robert, fondly known as Rob, was interested in all things audio and visual, which ultimately led to a lifelong career as a gifted cinematographer, filmmaker and visual storyteller. As a three year-old boy he was enamored with his father’s reel-to-reel tape recorder and was fascinated with recording. His grandfather owned a custom photo-finishing and camera shop and Robert spent many afternoons at the store learning about darkroom techniques and cameras. As a ten year-old, his childhood in Queens consisted of scripting, and then filming home movies of all the neighborhood children on his street. He turned the 20th Avenue block into its own mini Hollywood backlot, even transforming the garage into a dressing room for the cast of kids who demanded one.
Rob attended Public Elementary School 184, followed by Hunter College High School and New York University, a path over which he met many of his lifelong friends.
Rob trained at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts, where his talent behind the camera quickly distinguished him among his peers. While at NYU, he earned Best Cinematography honors for his work on student productions, including Strangers in the Night. His cinematography on the 35mm thesis film Rain played a significant role in helping the production earn an Audience Award at the Grenoble Film Festival in 1992, an early recognition of the visual skill that would define his career. After graduation, Rob continued to build his reputation in New York’s film community, serving as cinematographer on independent feature films including Murdered Innocence, starring Jason Miller. His work reflected both technical mastery and a deep understanding of storytelling through light, movement, and composition. Rob’s greatest professional legacy, however, came through his long tenure as a Producer-Shooter with Globus Gateway, where he created visually stunning travelogue films that brought the beauty of the world to audiences everywhere. Through his lens, viewers journeyed to extraordinary locations: from the mysterious landscapes of Easter Island to the breathtaking heights of Machu Picchu and countless destinations in between. Whether filming ancient ruins, vibrant cityscapes, or sweeping natural vistas, Rob approached each project with curiosity, artistry, and respect for the places and people he encountered. His images did more than document travel – they transformed geography into visual poetry.
Those who studied and worked alongside Rob remember his dedication to the craft of cinematography and his reverence for the great masters of the field. He admired the work of legendary cinematographers, studying their techniques and striving to achieve the same standard of excellence in his own work. His classmates at NYU remember him as a cinematographer who saw the world not just as it was, but as it could be lit, framed, and brought to life.
Robert also challenged himself by minoring in Physics while at NYU. In recent years he was known to say to his college age nephew, “learn something new, take a class you wouldn’t ordinarily take to expose yourself to different types of knowledge, take Physics!”
In later years Rob would become the founder and proprietor of LoScalzo Media Design, a full service digital media production firm that conceptualized and produced video presentations. His work in both film and video encompassed corporate image presentations, promotional documentaries, product demonstrations and live event recordings. A video that Rob produced for the International Trademark Association’s 125th Anniversary was awarded the silver TELLY Award, the highest honor in the competition and one of the most sought-after awards in the TV, commercial and video industry.
Rob will be remembered not only for his professional achievements, but for his quiet dedication to excellence and his enduring passion for visual storytelling. His work stands as a lasting testament to the power of cinema to connect people across cultures and distances.
Robert was especially proud to be a stepfather to his son and daughter. He was a significant presence in their lives from elementary school age, up through adulthood and enjoyed seeing their successes. Rob even became fluent in Portuguese to show his love and dedication to their family. He was also proud to add Grandpa Bob and Uncle Bob to his list of titles. He always looked forward to weekend outings at IHOP with his grandchildren. Over the years he was known to take photos of his nephews at their little league baseball and hockey games. Rob recently enjoyed collaborating on a few personal film projects with his oldest nephew, who is a film major following in Rob’s footsteps.
In recent years Robert became a community advocate. He was passionate about many causes and as one friend states “Robert was known for putting together incredibly detailed presentations, which was his signature. There is much that Robert did behind the scenes that made our community and our city a better place.” He was someone who defined virtue and principle. As another local friend commented, “Robert was such a dedicated and thoughtful member of his community, always standing up for what is right and getting to the bottom of issues with his unique research skills. He left an important mark on his corner of the world and we’re all better for it.
Robert is survived by his stepson Diego Paixao, stepdaughter-in-law Amanda Paixao and their children, Wagner and Bruna; his stepdaughter Dihana Paixao; his sister Linda White, brother-in-law Michael White and their children, William and James; as well as other relatives and the many friends that Robert considered to be like family. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Dominick and Barbara Loscalzo.
Robert W. LoScalzo, in his own words… Meticulous craftsman; Diligent thinker, writer, advocate; Caring stepfather, relative and friend.
