Prof. Tim Chao passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 4, 2021, surrounded by family in their home in Flushing, NY, at the age of 96.
Born in Dezhou, China, Prof. Chao grew up amid Japanese occupation of China, and attended Beijing Normal University, where he played on the basketball team, until he moved to Taiwan in 1948 during the revolution. There, he began a long, distinguished career as a physical education professor. In 1964, he moved to the U.S. to earn a Masters degree in Education from the University of Pittsburgh, then moved to Queens where he was joined by his wife Helen and their children, Grace, Victor, and Henry. He spent most of his career coaching swimming, volleyball, basketball, tennis, taichi, badminton, and table tennis. He was credited for bringing men’s volleyball to the east coast, by launching a program at Queensborough Community College in 1970.
Prof. Chao was an accomplished athlete and mentor, cherished by family, friends, colleagues, and students for his strong will and sharp mind, which he carried through even to his final hours. He took on all experiences with gusto, and had an endless library of captivating stories to tell about all of them. Prof. Chao always stood up for his beliefs, believed fiercely in family bonds, and was a rock for his children, grandchildren, and late wife, whom he missed dearly. He loved family gatherings, traveling the world, watching tennis and basketball, playing mahjong, expressing his love through food, and enjoying a glass of whiskey with good company.
Prof. Chao is survived by his children, grandchildren, extended family and family friends—many of whom can credit him for the lifelong gifts of sport and wisdom. We cherish our memories with him and the lessons and laughter we shared with him will be with us, always.
Anyone who would like to pay their respects can visit Prof. Chao at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum at 2030 Wellwood Ave. in Farmingdale, NY, starting Nov. 7.
