William (“Bill”) McGovern was born on April 27, 1955 and grew up in Flushing, Queens with his parents and three siblings, Eileen, Brian, and Paul. Discovering his passion for music early on, he played guitar in a rock band and collected the records of his favorite musicians. He pursued his musical interests at Queens College at the Aaron Copland School of Music as a classical guitarist. It was there that he met the love of his life, Barbara, whom he later married. Bill and Barbara had two daughters together, Kirsten and Emily, who he cherished. Bill went on to become a self-taught computer programmer, and worked at the Department of Environmental Protection in Boston for many years. In his free time, he enjoyed reading classic literature, learning to speak Chinese, and helping his daughters with everything from math homework to refereeing basketball games. Bill was known for his great sense of humor, making everyone laugh with jokes or his uncanny impressions. He had a deep appreciation for music, food, and drink, and found joy in the details of his surroundings, whether it be a light on a stoop or the changing fall leaves. Bill is survived by his wife of 43 years and his two daughters, but he will be missed by many more who knew him for the persistently kind, caring, and thoughtful person he was.
