I have been searching on social media for Bill off and on that past 25 years since I moved back to Greece and lost touch with him.  Today I remembered him again and did another search and found this page. I am very saddened by his loss. What a great human being. I will never forget his ability to mimic someone perfectly that he met seconds before and the countless mimic conversations he did of our then boss Peter (quick German accent) and our co worker Boris (heavy Russian accent). But my favorite quote of his was asking him what his name is (being married to a Cretan woman) he would respond with a smile Vasillis McGovernakis!  My condolences to his family even if it is 2 years later.

I sadly discovered today from my old friend Kieran Ames that Billy passed away.  He was a fine human being, and his gentle demeanor stands out in my memory as a rare and special thing.  Even in his teenage years, his honesty and integrity were outstanding, and though I lost track of him long ago, I am sure he lived the life of a “stand up” guy.  To his family and loved ones, I am so sorry for your loss, and comfort yourselves knowing that he world is a better place for having had him in it.              -Mike Mangini

My wife, Shalini and I are utterly at loss of words to say final good bye to Bill. I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago before his demise and little did I have inkling that it was the last time I would hear him as he held on to the spirit of optimism and exceedingly greater faith in the wonders of medical science. I had known Bill since my stint in DEP where I worked for almost 14 years and I worked with him on so many projects that my appraisal would not be complete without mention of him. At one point, when the primary database administrator left the department, Bill and I shared the responsibility to support the system for one complete year and at one critical moment when the applications crashed, we both ploughed through manuals to restore the system. He had an exquisite programming aptitude and would catalog such an eloquent code that I would tease him to be of musical genre. He was a connoisseur of music and wine and he knew it so well how to complement it with even Indian spicy food that is in no way soft on pallet. Bill was one person who stood by me like a rock in all the difficult times so much so I could repose my distress on his friendly bosom. He supported me unflinchingly as I transitioned into private sector and encouraged to find my niche in the IT world. I would remember him forever for all that he was: loving father through whom I knew so much about Kirstein and Emily as much, loving husband who walked miles hand-in-hand with Barbara from his college days His broad smile says all about him and all that he was. Wishing you and your family the strength to cope up with the loss.

So sorry to hear about Bill's passing.  I worked at DEP and would see him in passing.  He was very friendly and always asked how I was doing.  He will truly be missed.  My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Dear Barbara and family - It is with great sympathy that we learned of Bill's passing.  We will miss his kindness as well as chatting with him on walks from the train and in the backyard.  His warm smile and genuine concern for people was a comfort to us.  The neighborhood won't be the same without him.

I worked with Bill at MassDEP for almost 30 years.  I referred to him as the "Master of the TURA Universe".  He created programs for our complicated and immense database.

He had a wonderful sense of humor, and was very dedicated.

I loved his wit, his impressions and his very kind and relaxed demeanor. Growing up, us McNamara's could never get enough of the beach. Bill was my colleague and good friend for 19 years.
Bill was one of the smartest professionals I’ve worked in my life. Always finding solutions to the most complex tasks he was taking and leading our whole group. 
Bill was such a positive person. He really enjoyed life: knowing and loving music, being expert in good food, loving all moments of being. He lived with smile and it’s the way I’ll always remember him.
Even being sick he was always thinking about others. In his last message from hospital to me he was asking about my grandson… We’ll remember about you forever Bill, and my grandson will know who this tall gray-haired man on the video from his baptism is.


I will miss Bill’s witty conversation, his humor, his homemade kielbasa that he shared at neighborhood events,  and most of all – his kindness. An amazing conversationalist, Bill had a very special way of really caring about what people said. I will miss these conversations, and especially our shared stories about being from NY and ending up as neighbors in MA. 
RIP Bill. Your neighbors will circle the MA wagons around Barbara.

It's so tough but I decided to add memories about Bill. Nice personality, intelligent, loving husband and father. At work ??? Computer programming was his love  and what he adored, adored to be in front of his computer.
I called  him 'Mother Teresa'. Only Bill could give his time to work unconditionally, help anyone who  asked him, sit and explain, explain the structure of codes for beginning employees. If we were all running and dreaming about vacations, Bill reacted the opposite. It was punishment for him, but when he came back from vacation he talked and told us a stories of how fantastic the trip that Barbara organized was.
He was a considerate, tactful, good friend, cheerful so we will remember him.


Tuesday in office, when a colleague broke this news to me, I cannot help bursting into tears. Still I cannot embrace the fact that I am not going to see Bill again. In the past months, from time to time, it flashed in my mind that Bill will soon come back from New York with his shining smile and we will resume our joyful chat on family, music, Chinese language & culture. So many times, his humorous remarks and amazing impersonations really made my day.   Bill, it is so wonderful to work with you the past 17 years, and thank you so much for all the joy and happiness you’ve brought to people surrounding you. RIP and we pray for Barbara, Kirsten, Emily, and your families being blessed through! 

I had the pleasure of working with Bill throughout my 25+ years at MassDEP. He always brought his best self to the office making work an enjoyable experience for all of us. His smile, his humor and his laugh was infectious and will be missed. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones. We grieve with you and can only imagine how much greater this loss is for you.

My deepest sympathies are with Barbara, Kirsten, Emily and the extended McGovern family.  At work, we all loved Bill and will miss him terribly, but understand how much more a loss this is for his family.  Bill was kind, thoughtful, funny, and always willing to give a hand to lift up a colleague in need.  His warmth and patience with others when sharing his knowledge was legendary.  Bill was a brilliant problem solver, who could come up with an innovative solution, when we were all ready to throw in the towel.  Bill routinely brushed off praise from his colleagues and the only time he would gush with pride was when he talked about his wife and girls.  Prayers for the strength that you need to comfort you.   

I had known Bill for 18 years when I joined the Mass. Dept. of Environmental Protection. I used to greet him as "Mr. Bill" after an SNL character and we would do impersonation of Bill Belichik and talk about the Jets. Just looking at him would bring a smile to my face. He was the absolute nicest person I have ever known, and if you asked anyone who knew him, they would tell you the same. He kept his spirits high and would insist on working and helping others even though he was visibly weak from the chemotherapy. He will be greatly missed...

Oh, Barbara! I am so sorry to hear your heartbreaking news. Thinking of you and hoping there's some comfort in the beautiful music we've sung together and knowing its a small balm for such a loss...
