It is with heavy hearts that we announce Alissa passed away just a few weeks before her 55th birthday after a long battle with cancer. The granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, she inherited a strong will to survive and she fought very hard through many different treatments until the very end. She can now rest finally and be at peace.
Alissa was a life long resident of NYC and a true city girl at heart. She was a unique character who always marched to the beat of her own drum. She also somehow never really lost her childlike sense of wonder. Alissa was an animal lover with a big heart who was very involved with her neighborhood cat rescue network and a long time employee of the NYC DOE working with a team that supported special needs students. She loved music, dancing, attending gatherings with her neighbors and decorating her garden for holidays, especially Halloween. Even during the worst of her cancer treatment she refused to be seen in public without one of her many beautiful wigs and some lipstick.
She is survived by her son Michael, her parents Sara & Howie, Lester & Linda, her sister Hayley, her nieces Maya & Zoe as well as her uncle, aunt, cousins and the many friends she made through her lifetime. We know she would be mad if we didn’t also include her beloved fur babies Shadow and Batman who she adored more than a lot of people.
Alissa will be missed greatly by the many people who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her honor to the following organization:
Sharsheret - Providing support and assistance to women with breast and ovarian cancer https://sharsheret.org/
The family will also be organizing a fundraiser to help support her son and will post that information at a later time.
A funeral service will be held at Schwartz Brothers-Jeffer Memorial Chapels, located at 114-03 Queens Blvd, Forest Hills, NY, 11375, on February 10, 2026, from 11:30 am to 12:15 pm.
Following the funeral service, a committal service will take place at New Montefiore Cemetery, located at 1180 Wellwood Ave, West Babylon, NY, 11704, on February 10, 2026, from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm.
