I’m so saddened to hear of Ms. Halper’s passing. She was an extraordinary, brilliant teacher. I will never forget her encouragement.  It  has stayed with me all my life.  We were so lucky to have her. 

This evening I came across a letter of recommendation that Mrs. Halper, as I knew her in FHHS, wrote for me in 1986 when I was applying to various colleges. I had had her as my English teacher for a semester in 10th grade, and didn’t do very well in her class, as I seemed more interested in my hairbrush than my work (her words, lol). In 12th grade, I was less than thrilled to find out she would be my teacher again, until another English teacher, Mrs. Harts, in whose class I had done quite well, told me that she was close friends with Mrs. Halper, and I knew I had to give her and myself another chance to succeed in her English class. As time passed, I became more aware of her expectations, and tried my best to meet and surpass them. Ultimately, I did quite well and blossomed in her class. As I gave more of myself, I saw much more of who she was as an educator and as a person as well. When it came time to ask her to write a letter of recommendation for me, I didn’t hesitate, and she in turn wrote such an incredible testament to my growth and capabilities, that my mother still has a copy all these years later. I have thought about her through the years, especially when at the age of 37, I changed careers and became a teacher myself. I would have loved to discuss my teaching career with her, especially as an ELA teacher, and am saddened to hear I’ll never have the opportunity due to her very recent passing. Hopefully my words will serve as a celebration of Mrs. Halper, who played an integral part in my growth as a student and as a person in general. My sincere condolences to her family and friends.
