

Dr. Irvin Norman Hirshfield, 84, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2024, at his home in Roslyn, NY. Born on March 30, 1940, Dr. Hirshfield was a beloved microbiologist and mentor who dedicated his life to science and the advancement of knowledge. He ran cross-country track in high school and played tennis throughout his adult life. He completed his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at the University of Delaware in 1961 and earned his doctorate in biochemistry at the University of Pittsburgh in 1965. Soon after, he married Dorothy Singer on August 22, 1965.
From 1978-2019, Dr. Hirshfield taught and conducted research at St. John's University, where he served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, including six years as Department Chair. Throughout his tenure, he touched the lives of countless students, inspiring many to pursue careers in science and medicine.
Dr. Hirshfield is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Dorothy S. Hirshfield; his daughters, Zoe Grella and Dr. Sabina Hirshfield; his beloved grandson, Wyatt Avery Vogel; and his loving sons-in-law, Al Grella and Paul Vogel. He will be remembered for his kindness, boundless fascination with science, generosity, and steadfast support of his family, friends, and students.
Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at 11:30 AM at Sinai Chapels, located at 114-03 Queens Blvd, Forest Hills, NY 11375. Burial will follow at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Glendale, NY.
