and Eula Del (Allen) Webb was born in Queens, New York on April
2, 1946. He was one of nine children born of that union.
Larry grew up in Brooklyn, NY and was educated in the NYC
public school system. However, he was more interested in making
money and began working at the age of 10 years old. One of his
first jobs was being a shoe shine boy, he even had his own little kit
and he would eagerly wait for the men to come out of their
businesses to shine their shoes. He also delivered milk on a milk
truck as a young boy. We are not sure when his love for food came
about but as he grew up, he eventually landed a job at the
Marriott Hotel in Philadelphia, PA as a Food Service worker until
he was drafted into the military.
Around Spring of 1966 Larry met the love of his life, Dianne
Wooden, at a basement party that she was invited to by her
cousin Hattie Mae who happened to work at the same hotel in NW
Philadelphia. It was love at first sight for Larry but he was too
scared to say something to her. After the party he charmed
Dianne by shielding her from the rain with his giant umbrella.
After a short period of time of dating, Larry was drafted into the
US Army in Spring 1967. After his basic training at Fort Bragg, NC,
Larry came home on leave and married Dianne and she became
Mrs. Dianne Webb and she had their first child, Larry Anthony
Webb in that year.
Larry’s career in the army lasted from 1967 to 1975 with two tours
in Vietnam. Before he went to Vietnam he was stationed in
Germany where he would have kept his first Passover. That’s
important later….. Not only was Larry a soldier in the army he also
was a Cook, Food Service Specialist, Kitchen Supervisor, and
throughout his army career, he was known for his culinary skills
feeding hundreds of men at one time.
On his first tour in Vietnam, he was stationed at Cu Chi and was
part of the D Troop 3/4 Calvary, 25th Infantry. He was a M60 gunner
on a M548 track vehicle among other duties escaping arms fire and
rocket attacks. Larry had two Honorable discharges from the army
where he received medals such as the National Defense Service
Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army
Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star Medal to name a few.
Larry was last stationed at Fort Leonard Wood army base in
Missouri, where he and his wife had two more children. Before
leaving the army, Larry went on to complete his formal education
in the US Army Food Service Training School where he received
Military Occupational Specialty as a "Food Service Specialist" in
“Quality Management System”. He also received his GED from
Waynesville High School of Waynesville, Missouri in 1975.
Immediately after leaving the army he went on to complete the New
York Food and Hotel Management School in New York.
In February 1977, Larry and Dianne moved to Queensbridge Houses
in Long Island City, NY with their three children: Larry, Floyd and
Rochelle. In April 1977 around the Passover season, Larry began to
be retooled and committed himself to the laws of the Most High.
Inspired and coached by his brother, Nasi Tavel Ben-Yehudah, he
began to fellowship at Hashabah Yisrael (Israelite Congregation) led
by Cohen Hagadol Levi Ben Yisrael. Hashabah Yisrael was located at
539 Belmont Ave. in Brooklyn, NY and there is where he kept his 2nd
Passover and soon after emerged Yaroah Ben-Yehudah which was
his new Hebrew name. Now at this time is when his children began to
call him “Abo”which is Hebrew for “father”.
Adon Yaroah began to continue to live in his life purpose of feeding
the community of Hashabah Yisrael. He started such projects like a
Fruit and Vegetable Stand, Fish Market and worked in the community
Deli Store where he made delicious sandwiches.
Adon Yaroah and his wife who was renamed to Gevert Dinah
Baht-Yehudah had a set of twins in 1978, Nasael and Quanael
Ben-Yehudah. In or about 1981 Adon Yaroah was shot in the
neck by someone who tried to rob the Deli. By the grace of the
Most High, he survived that attempt on his life.
During a reconstruction period of Hashabah Yisrael, Adon
Yaroah began to spend more time in Queensbridge. Not only
did Adon Yaroah love his Israelite Community, he also loved
the community of Queensbridge Houses. He was affectionately
known in the community of Queensbridge as “Green Eyes”
because of his natural green eyes. Between his children, calling
him Abo and friends calling him Green Eyes, people knew who
you were referring to when you said those names. Living in
Queensbridge in the 80’s and 90’s was a rough period of time
but it wasn’t too rough for a soldier like Green Eyes. The war
stories of Green Eyes in Queensbridge will be kept in the lost
books and in the memories of those who walked the earth with
this gentle giant.
After many years of not being a part of a formal Israelite
Congregation, Adon Yaroah re-emerged and found himself at
B’nai Adath Kol Beth Yisrael located at 1006 Greene Ave. in
the Bed-Stuy section of Brooklyn, NY. For the past 25 years,
Adon Yaroah worked with tireless dedication at the temple as
well as in Queensbridge houses. During his time at B’nai
Adath he became the Executive Chef in charge of all food
preparations. He was the first one to have a dine-in style
kosher soup kitchen servicing the general population.
He was instrumental in many fundraising events, such as
Chicken and Waffles and Pizza Night to help with the
renovations of B’nai Adath, the Temple that he loved so much.
He was the chef to cater many auspicious occasions from
weddings to the Board of Rabbis dinners.
Because of his wisdom and fatherly advice everyone began to
call him“Abo”. From the least of them to the greatest of them
he was known as Abo. On his 70th Birthday, in 2016, he was
elevated to the title of “Zaquain” which means Elder but Abo
continued to be a father to all. Abo also adopted a new home at
Beth Shalom EH Congregation located at 730 Willoughby Ave in
Brooklyn, NY, after the tragic fire at his home temple, BAKBY,
in 2017. He continued to dedicate himself to the Most High and
his people and worked in their kitchen which was his joy. Abo
also helped run the food pantry and dedicated himself to insure
that the Israelite Community and the Community surrounding
Beth Shalom were fed. Over the years Abo has received
numerous awards for his hard work, dedication, and culinary
skills in the Israelite Community. His latest award that he
received was the Chief of Chief Naphtali Ben-Naphtali “Emunah
Shleymah Award” presented to him from the Israelite Men’s
Association & Phenomenal Israelite Women’s Association in
2022.
For the past 25 years he also was a diligent community activist
working along side of Mrs. McQueen, Veronica Franklin and the
Friends of Queensbridge Park; he was one of the founding
members that helped with the renovation and the upkeep of the
park. He helped to implement events like Dancing Under the
Stars, the yearly Winter Dance and Chicken & Waffles to name a
few. He received numerous awards for his hard work and
dedication. In 2019 he received a City Council Citation signed by
Council Member, Jimmy Van Bramer for the 20th Anniversary of
FOQP and being a founding member. He was a member of the
Jacob Riis “Senior” CC. He loved to play cards at the
community center with his friends Mrs. Virgie Alston and Mr
Stanley, just to name a few.
Larry, Yaroah, Green Eyes, Abo was a
Leader, Teacher, Mentor, Friend, Legend,
Dedicated Servant and our Hero.
He will be sorely missed.
