I am terribly saddened to learn that Maddy lost her courageous battle.  My heart goes out to her family.  I met Maddy (and Myron) in 1974 when we taught together and we were all very young. I was single and did not own a car and they generously gave me tides to school.  I will never forget arranging to meet that summer in Paris at Cafe Fouquet and spending some time together. In August 1976 Maddy and Myron were at our wedding.  Children were born and grew beyond the carriage so we bought the british carriage from M and M and used it for our 4 children. It was a special time.
All the children are grown, and Maddy became a loving grandma.  We moved to the West Coast and connected on facebook.  I always had Maddy in my prayers and followed the family's support.

I first met Maddie about 40 some odd years ago when my brother Danny got married and moved into her building. I remember seeing her at the Bay Terrace Pool.. and having dinner with her, seeing her at  Milk Farm and all the other wonderful memories I have of her… my mom  loved her, She will be so missed. What a kind  and wonderful person she  was….there is special place in heaven for her.

I met Maddy through her sister Lynne 15 years ago when my husband was diagnosed with B cell Lymphoma. It was at this time that I got to know this most incredible woman. She took it upon herself to call my husband everyday giving him courage to pursue his treatment while clearly outlining his expectations of treatment and giving  him the courage to go on. At the same time  calling me to make sure I was able to handle the stress of this illness and treatment giving me a positive outlook. Maddy was a kind, compassionate, and loving individual . I was devastated to learn of Maddy’s untimely passing. I had the honor and privilege of growing up just across the hall from Maddy and her family. She was always a constant presence in my life—she literally knew me from the day I was born.

Maddy watched me grow up and was there for my family countless times over the years. She later got to see me start my own family, and every time I saw her—even recently—she would greet me with that warm, familiar smile.

I truly hope the co-op honors her with a fitting tribute. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

I am so grateful to have had the pleasure to know Maddy. She exuded abundant energy , love of family and an infectious passion for life. It was clear how devoted she was to her children and grandchildren! Her passing is a profound loss! My love, thoughts and prayers are with you all💔

My heart felt condolences to Maddy’s family. I, along with the entire staff at St. Mary’s Hospital of Bayside, will truly miss Maddy. She embraced children and staff with kindness and sincerity. Her positivity and calm approach was infectious, dovetailing so perfectly  with our environment. I will miss our discussions on Bayside’s history.

Throughout my educational journey, only a handful of teachers have had a lasting impact on my life, and my “Ethel”, without a doubt, is one of them. Maddy was my substitute teacher and tutor over 44 years ago.

My deepest condolences go out to Maddy's family.

I am so sorry for your lost, Maddie Hacken meant so much to me and my family.  Maddie was my tutor throughout Elementry school.  She was not just my teacher but became family.  Maddie would bring Elana and Bryan over.  Maddie also would always buy me licorice gum only one store in bayside sold it.  Years passed and then I saw Maddie at work, I was so excited to see her, whenever she came to work we would catch up on what has happen in our lives, I also have a book in my classroom that Maddie gave me as a child that she wrote in it, she couldnt believe I still had it.  Maddie Hacken made a big impact in my life.  I love you Maddie

Cousin Maddy had a way of making the world feel smaller, warmer, and more connected. She was the kind of person you could fall into a conversation with and forget time existed—never a trace of awkwardness, always full of genuine care. She asked the kinds of questions that made you feel seen, heard, and known, and she always wanted the real answer. She was deeply curious about how you were doing, what was new in your life, and how you were truly feeling—and she remembered it all.

Maddy had a beautiful gift for staying close, no matter the distance. Whether it was a sweet note on your birthday, a thoughtful check-in after a big moment, or a perfectly-timed photo that made you feel like you were right there with her, she made each of us feel like we were an important part of her big, beautiful world. And in doing so, she made our worlds brighter too.

There’s a space now where Maddy should be—at every occasion, every gathering, every little moment that would have meant a thoughtful text, a warm hug, or a long, effortless catch-up. Her absence will be deeply felt, but her love and the joy she gave will continue to echo in all of us.

The service was beautiful.  Maddy was such a wonderful person.  Thank you for the opportunity for those of us who are not living closer, to have been able to share in the love.  I watched from Carefree, Arizona.  XXOO to family.

I've had the privilege to meet Maddy on several occasions, and despite only several, that is all it took for her to make an unforgettable impression on me. Her welcomeness, warmth, and positivity is something I will carry with me forever and continue to witness within her beautiful family.

Amazingly, I never met Maddy.  We bonded over a connection to her cousin and my best friend.   Maddy and I became friends and I became an honorary cousin.  I felt privileged to be included in Maddy's circle, receiving concerned messages over my health, holiday greeting and almost daily smiles via e-mail.   Maddy's  messages demonstrated her warmth, love, and sense of humor.  I will miss the daily smiles.

We loved Maddy so very much. Such a bright star.  To know her was to feel loved. She had a way of making everyone feel seen, welcomed, and cared for—as if we were all her own. Her warmth, wisdom, and laughter will live on in the lives she touched, who carries her light so beautifully.  

I remember one day when my son was a few months old and crying so much.  Maddy picked him up and rocked him till he fell asleep.  She just had a way of taking care of everyone. 

We will miss her deeply, but we are forever grateful to have known her. What a gift she was to this world.

My sister, Amy Sevell Nelson and I grew up in Bay Terrace. From the littlest of ages,  when she and Maddy met they became  fast friends for life. We lived just around the corner from Maddy so they could easily walk to each others house.  As the big sister, I knew her as well. A memory that I have of Maddy is her big smile and generous spirit.   I am deeply saddened by her death.

Maddy has been a very dear, close friend of my family since she and my father were in grade school. Over the years, Maddy and her family were present for all of my major life milestones, and we all shared many birthdays and holidays together. Maddy was a warm, caring, generous woman who I was very fortunate to have in my life.

I can't imagine a world without Maddy in it. Rest in peace, Maddy, I will miss you forever.

Words cannot begin to explain the impact that Maddy had on our lives. A   dear friend for over 60 years, Maddy defined what friendship, loyalty, and devotion are all about. She was the glue that held everything and everyone together.  There is not one person that we know that did not love and admire her.

Maddy was always an optimist and never complained. She made everything all right. Even in her final days, she tried to comfort all who came to visit her or call her. She loved people as much as she loved life itself. We cannot imagine life without her.
