Martin Zeichner was born in New York City, the son of Helen and Solomon Zeichner. He graduated from the Bronx High School of Science. He had a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in theater from SUNY Binghamton. Martin was always very interested in electronics and computers and, after a very short-lived career as an actor, he followed his natural inclination to understand how things worked: he entered the field of video post-production. He worked his way up from the mailroom, teaching himself how to do film-to-tape transfers and color correction. He worked at Magno Sound and Video for 19 years and then continued his career at Post Perfect, Image Group, Technicolor and Deluxe.
Martin was a pioneer of colorist technologies, working with film and then high-definition video. He was an early expert in HDR and was a known problem-solver, often writing his own software to manage inefficiencies in the early versions of this technology.
Martin has over 100 credits as a colorist including famous HBO series such as Boardwalk Empire, Sex and The City, Divorce, Girls, and Crashing. His other well-known works include The Knick, Marco Polo, Hap & Leonard and a Zeichner family favorite, Courage the Cowardly Dog. He is also known for movies such as The Devil Wears Prada, Inside Llewyn Davis, Learning to Drive, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, You’ve Got Mail, and the mini-series Angels in America.
Martin is survived by his wife, Wendy Zeichner, and his oldest son, Nathan Zeichner & wife, Cecilia Zeichner, and youngest son, Elliot Zeichner. Martin loved New York City and co-owned a brownstone in Hell’s Kitchen for 36 years before moving to a coop on the eastside.
Sympathy cards can be sent to Wendy Zeichner, 425 East 58th Street Apt 6C, New York, NY 10022. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to CurePSP (psp.org) or MJHS Hospice (mjhs.org).
