very sorry to hear about Mr Leffler - Melanie's Dad's - passing. Melanie, I haven't seen you in decades but with everything going on in the world over last several years I refer often to your family, your parents, grandparents and how they shared jewish holidays with everyone and participated in the holidays of other families of different religions in the best ways.

 your grandmother encouraging us to "go ahead and break fast" (before the adults did) with candy lipsticks and chocolates we were looking forward to when  the fast officially ended ...  your father and mother laughing - probably so hungry - agreeing that ' of course, kids and candy are the exception.'  As an adult, all my amis: jewish, muslim, catholic, buddhist, all of them have that same 'all for 1 and 1 for all' quality your family will always represent  to me.

I'm so sorry your dad is not here but in so many ways he is and always will be in the hearts and minds of every good person of every religion, nationality, skin tone, gender ... who ever had the good fortune to know him :-)

Dear Uncle Rob, 
I find it difficult to think and write about you in the past tense. 
An amazing person, whose desires and intentions were always to do good to those around him. Ever since I was a little girl, you treated me with a warm and loving attitude, always containing, accepting and all encompassing . 
All my memories of you are accompanied by good experiences, treats, deep conversations. You always knew how to approach me and how to make me happy and take care of me. I am so happy and appreciate so much that you were present at our wedding and that you made such a big  effort to come to Israel last year. I'm glad that my family got to know all your sides and your special character and that you also got to know them.

We lost one of the warmest, kindest and generous souls last week when Uncle Bob made his transition.
He is one of those people whose love I trusted so completely that now in his absence I feel an empty space, where that knowing his love was there filled. As I did with my Mother, when she passed, I again question “who will believe in me now”.
He was my 1 degree of separation from Lou Reed from his days at Syracuse and we shared many musical experiences during our visits.
Mostly he fed a lot of my knowledge of 60’s Rock & Pop but a highlight was seeing Neil Young on a solo acoustic tour where he played “Rockin’ in the Free World” before it was released.
He was less a fan of specific group, or person, than a sing along with the chorus to the songs of his childhood.
We talked Baseball, Basketball and Football and he forgave my Boston roots and allegiances - it was 26 years before I could really claim any competition.
He was incredibly generous, in 50 years I never got to take my wallet out, instead of that physical generosity I remember his generosity of spirit. He always spent time seeing how I was and I could count on his advice, support and guidance.
I admire that I never saw him unkind and he navigated a very difficult physical life with a positive attitude the entire time I knew him. 
There was a legendary story of young me going out with him, my grandfather and my Uncle Joe, all of whom walked with a limp and I returned from the excursion limping in solidarity.
I will recall him every Holiday, and on vacations which we frequently shared, NY Bagels, Ham & Lox, Deli food, sketching golf courses and Pork Chops. 
When I hear Simon & Garfunkel, The Boss and Jackson Brown he is in there singing backup vocals. 
And I will remember the sanctuary he always offered in his homes over the years.
I continue to feel the vibrations you have left and I hope your with Mom, and the Grandmothers and your friends celebrating and reuniting with those Spirits who love you.

Here in this photo, which holds so many memories for me in one image, he is celebrating a Christmakah gift.
For about 35 years (at least in my foggy memories) we would celebrate Christmakah together the week after Christmas. A group of Jews celebrating a blended Holiday of our own, off peak.
I can feel his laughter in this photo and it is fitting that he is awash in Orange light.
Those who knew him know that Orange wasn’t his favorite color, but it was his favorite team and I would root for them with him “Go Orange!”

Robert is such a loved man. I met you when I was 23 years old and immediately discovered an amazing person, always smiling, and so pleasant. You immediately gave me a sense of security and comfort when in your company. I even remember that although I had difficulty with my English, with you it was always okay to talk and make mistakes without embarrassment, this is what allowed me to learn to speak more freely. You were always humble and so much fun. All of this was before I married Becky - just to remind you. 

You and Susan and your amazing girls played a big part in welcoming me into this wonderful family. All of you always acted with modesty and great and true love. A huge thank you for making the long journey once again to Israel for Yali's Bar Mitzvah not so long ago. We were blessed with your presence once again! 

Oh, by the way, thank you so much for teaching me to love gin and tonic so much..., it's Becky's and mine's favorite drink. 
Thank you Uncle Robert, I love you. Rest in peace. Ilan


Dear Uncle Robert,  
Such a kind, always smiling, generous and thoughtful person.
I am privileged to have known you and have had you in my life, even from a long distance and for short periods of time. 
Every moment we spent together you and your wonderful family was meaningful and memorable.
I am so glad you made the trips to Israel for our special occasions (my Bat Mitzvah, Yali’s Bar Mitzvah and weddings) and my children got to know what a great great uncle they had.
Rest in peace, love and miss  you even more, Rivkah.

Dear Susan and family, I was truly saddened to hear of Bob’s passing.  He was such a lovely man who I knew and worked with for over 30 years.  I know he will be missed by all of you, his beloved family. Because I am out of the country so  I cannot attend his funeral which I would have,  but my condolences are with you all.
