Shirley Stark Lustbader (née Welikson), age 99, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025, in Tavares, Florida. Born on March 29, 1926, in Brooklyn, New York, Shirley lived a long and vibrant life filled with music, learning, and deep devotion to her family.
From an early age, Shirley displayed a remarkable talent for music. She began playing the violin as a teenager and continued performing in orchestras well into her early 90s. Her love of music extended to the piano as well, and she brought joy to many through her musical gifts. She was an accomplished Suzuki violin teacher. A graceful dancer and enthusiastic leader of poolside aerobic exercises among friends, Shirley embraced movement and vitality throughout her life.
Shirley’s passion for science and medicine led her to return to school at the age of 51 to become a medical assistant—a testament to her lifelong curiosity and determination. She was also known for her culinary talents; her stuffed cabbage and potato latkes were legendary among those fortunate enough to enjoy them.
A devoted mother, Shirley encouraged her children to pursue their interests and excel in all they did. She enriched their lives with visits to museums and botanical gardens and supported their early education in ballet, art, and music. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family—she was a loving grandmother and great-grandmother who cherished time spent with younger generations. She also held a special place in her heart for her nieces and nephews.
Widowed at an early age, Shirley later found love again after moving to Florida. There she took up tennis and met Harold Lustbader. The two married and shared many happy years together.
Shirley’s legacy is one of resilience, creativity, warmth, and unwavering support for those she loved. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. May it bring comfort to reflect on a life so fully lived.
