Gary John Sandel

January 7, 1943-April 25, 2026

Gary John Sandel, age 83, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and deep connection to his family, students, and community.

Born in Winnipeg Manitoba -but raised in Crystal Beach, a place he cherished throughout his life, Gary carried his love for his hometown with him always. He dedicated his career to teaching at Ridgeway High School, where he became much more than an educator—he was a mentor, a role model, and a friend to countless students. Gary truly loved his job, and the feeling was mutual as it was rare for him to go anywhere without being warmly greeted by a former student whose life he had touched. His impact in the classroom extended far beyond academics, shaping generations with kindness, humour, and unwavering support.

Gary was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Kathleen Sandel, whom he met at the Palmwood in 1966. From that moment on, they were inseparable, sharing 57 wonderful years of marriage filled with love, devotion and partnership. Together they did everything side by side, building a life centered on family, love and togetherness.

He was a proud and loving father to his three sons, Sean Sandel (Rosanne), Danny Sandel (Viviane), and Patrick Sandel (Rebecca). Gary loved his boys deeply and was incredibly proud of the men they became. He also loved his daughters-in-law as if they were his own daughters. In a special way, Gary made sure to bring one of his sons along with him on every class trip, creating lasting memories that they will forever cherish.

Nothing brought Gary more joy than his seven grandchildren, whom he loved more than life itself. Kristine, Jake, Alyssa, Jenna, Ryan, Olivia, and Leah. His pride in them was immeasurable, and the lessons he taught them will continue to be seen for generations to come, living on through the values and love he instilled in them.

Gary also deeply cherished his friendships and the simple joys of time spent together. He will be greatly missed by his beloved breakfast club, where laughter and stories were always shared. He was adored by his sisters, sister in-laws, and brother in-laws. He will be remembered fondly by his large extended family and was lovingly known as “Uncle Gary” and “Uncle Sonny” to many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Although Gary is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in every story shared, every lesson remembered, and every life he touched along the way.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The family invites you to attend visitation on Friday May 1, 2026 from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Benner Funeral Services, 1105 Benner Avenue, Fort Erie.

A Funeral Service will commence on Saturday May 2, 2026 at 12:00 Noon with visitation beginning at 10:00 A.M. that morning.
