Albert Hogue, 103 years old, passed away on August 14, 2016 at his home at Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances, Ontario. Albert was born June 30, 1913 in Bluff Creek, Manitoba. He left the family farm in Silver Ridge, Manitoba to work in Ontario where he met and married Aline St.Onge in Sault Ste. Marie. They moved to Caramat, Ontario where Albert was employed as a mechanic in the woodlands department of the Marathon Pulp Mill for many years. After retiring in 1974, they relocated to Thunder Bay. Albert came to the Fort Frances area in 1997 to live with Diane and Garth and then in 2002 made Rainycrest his home.
Albert had an incredible work ethic, a positive, optimistic nature and had the ability to talk with anyone, anytime, anywhere. He loved to tell stories and always had a joke. He was very independent and determined and could be quite stubborn but at the same time adapted to situations in life that were not in his control, no matter how difficult. He began to lose his sight after he moved to Rainycrest which was challenging but he made the best of it, noting that he had been lucky to have been able to see as long as he did. He appreciated what he had, not what he didn’t have.
Albert loved music and grew up in a time and a home where everyone played a musical instrument.
He loved to dance, read, putter around in his workshop, fix things, scrapbook current events and interesting trivia, journal the weather, the outdoors, fishing – he enjoyed life. He was a weather watcher and could usually predict the weather more accurately than the Weather Channel using the moon and the signs of nature around him. During his lifetime he did many things, worked hard, cared deeply for his family and friends and lived out his life faithfully, with integrity and honesty.
He was predeceased by his parents, Marie Louise and Thomas Hogue, his wife and partner, Aline; his siblings, Yvonne, Laura (John), Eva (Wilford), Leo (Eva), Ida (Ed), Alice (Pete), Hector (Aurora), Ralph, Ernest, Oscar (Eva) and his son-in-law, Garth.
Albert is survived by siblings Raymond and Evelyn, sister-in-law Rena, his children, Maurice (Denise), Victor (Louise), Diane, grandchildren Mark Hogue, David (Carmen) Hogue and Geoffrey (James) Hogue, David (Stephanie) Black and Rachel (Mark) Skinner and great-grandchildren Alyssa and Michael Hogue, Caitlyn and Ethan Hogue, Sophia, Lila and Caleb Black and Josh and Matthew Skinner.
A celebration of Albert’s life will be held on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at Rainycrest Long-term Care with family and friends at 11:00 am in Hallett Hall with lunch and a time of fellowship to follow. Burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Thunder Bay at a later date where he will be laid to rest beside the woman who was his help-mate, friend, wife.
In celebration of his life, in memoriam donations may be made to Rainycrest LTC or another charity of your choice c/o Green Funeral Home, P.O. Box 427, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M8.
