

Annie Serena Mathews, age 96, of 550 Osborne St., Fort Frances, Ontario passed away on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at her residence in Fort Frances, Ontario.
Auntie was born October 20, 1913 in Brandon, Manitoba to the late Walter and Eva Avis. She moved to Fort Frances in 1924 where she resided since. Annie worked as a Nurse at Dr. McKenzie’s Hospital in Fort Frances for many years until her retirement. On December 15, 1937 she was united in marriage to Leslie Mathews. She was a long time member of St. John’s Anglican Church in Fort Frances. Auntie Annie was always there as caregiver to all her family and friends, and she will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her two brothers, Walter Avis and Wife Shirley and Brian Avis and wife Mona all of Fort Frances, ON.; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband; Leslie Mathews in 1990; three brothers, Sid, Percy and Allan Avis; and one sister, Nona Tierney.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John’s Anglican Church in Fort Frances, Ontario. Reverend William Giovetti and Reverend Barbara Murray officiated with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances, Ontario.
Friends visited with family Tuesday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, Ontario.
Pallbearers were Jim Avis, Guy Avis, Ken Avis, Don Angus, Leonard Hill and Dr. Barry Anderson.
