AVIS DE DÉCÈS

Donna (Douglass) Meany

11 juin 1936 – 1 janvier 2022
Avis de décès de Donna (Douglass) Meany
With deep sadness the family mourns the sudden passing of Donna Margaret Douglass-Meany, in her home at 85 years of age, on Saturday, January 1, 2022 following a heart attack.

Donna was born in Sault Ste. Marie to Duncan and Emily MacFarlane, their third child of seven girls. As a young girl Donna was very outgoing with a competitive nature that fuelled her activities and passion for sports, like playing on a basketball team that opened for the Harlem GlobeTrotters or kicking up her

legs on stage as a Can-can dancer. She enjoyed travelling and made a trip to Scotland, the

birthplace of her father. Her tenacious nature meant she was unafraid to tackle any job, so whenever her father had a flat tire he would call home and say “send Donna”. After graduating from Sault Ste. Marie Technical High School she worked as a secretary at Algoma Steel where she had taken a variety of office

courses. She married Mr. Douglass and had four children. Following their divorce she met the love of her life, Donald C. Meany, which led to the joyful addition of two more children. After a lengthy engagement they shared their vows on July 14, 2018. Donna was a loving and caring woman who was always giving her time to others and she instilled those traits into her motherhood. There was nothing that brought her greater joy, contentment, and pride then to be with her children and grandchildren; often playing board or card games and ever displaying her unconditional love of them.

Most of her life was spent in the small community of Atikokan, Ontario, where she worked hard at various jobs and places: Caland Mine, Steep Rock Iron Mine, Ontario Hydro, tree planting, and as a CN caretaker. She continued to enjoy watching and playing sports and will be remembered by many as an initiator of ringette in Atikokan, a baseball player on the Atikokan Rockets, and as a curler with her close friend and skip Harriet Morphet. Donna also enjoyed knitting, gardening, creating costumes, and participating in any town event she could. As a very social person that loved to be with and

help others; this was most visible through her volunteer work with minor hockey and the Atikokan

Legion Ladies. Recently we celebrated her 25th year of service with the Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

She was pre-deceased by her sisters Catherine Jean Porter (and her late husband Leslie), Nancy

May Morrison, and Mary-Lynn McCulloch; brother-in-law Paul Plancon.

She is survived by her husband Don Meany; her children Donna Zachariah (Kevin),

Dorinda Kora (George), Debbie Douglass, Danny ('Bart') Douglass (Holly), Sheila Douglass-Meany and Spencer Meany; her eight precious grandchildren, Jamie, Danyelle, Christopher, Nicholas, Kristin, Dani, Liam and Ryley; her siblings Edna Plancon, Lillian Hurley (Melvin), Shirley MacFarlane; brother-in-law

Gordon McCulloch; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

An informal celebration of life will be held in the spring. If so desired, donations may be made to Atikokan General Hospital; condolences may be mailed to Box 249, Atikokan, ON, P0T 1C0.

Though you have passed we are thankful for the gifts you planted in our homes, our hearts and our

minds... We love and miss you.
