

Ian was born on Tuesday, October 4, 1955 in Nuneaton, Warwick County, England. He immigrated to Canada with his parents, arriving in Fort Frances on May 17, 1966. Ian attended Fort Frances High School and while doing so, he and his older brother obtained pilots licenses. After graduating from Fort Frances High School Ian enrolled in the Avionics Repair Technician Program at Confederation College in Thunder Bay, ON. Upon graduation Ian and Gail Lemieux moved to Alberta where they wed in 1977 and had their only son Brian. After a brief marriage, Ian enrolled in the RPN program at Confederation College. After graduation he started his career at Rainycrest Home for the Aged where he would spend the next 25 years.
Ian was actively involved in the New Beginnings Fellowship Church as well as Bible Studies and other church related activities. Ian was very generous with his time and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Those who knew him, knew him as a quiet and gentle man. Ian found great joy in watching his grandchildren grow and never missed an opportunity to be at the arena to watch them on the ice.
Ian is survived by his father, Dr. Brian Johnstone, his son Brian (Hailey) Johnstone, and his grandchildren Sienna and Tristan. He is also survived by his brothers Tony (Barb) of Wichita, Kansas and Allan of Thunder Bay, ON, his sister Anne (Syd) Clemmer of Kitchener, ON, nieces Dr. Mary Jo (Adam) Johnstone, Alexandra (Rory) Tippet and nephew Mark.
Ian was predeceased by his mother Dr. Audrey Johnstone.
A memorial service to celebrate Ian’s life will be held at the New Beginnings Fellowship Church, 1301 Mill Road in Fort Frances on Monday, November 3, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Marcel Chenier officiating.
Ian will be laid to rest in the Lady Frances Columbarium at the Fort Frances Cemetery. Procession to the cemetery will take place following the service with a reception to follow at the church.
The honourary pallbearers will be John Vandermeer, Ken Preston, Walter Rogoza, Lyndon Hughes, Paul Redford, Gary Wilde and Gary Smith.
