Leon was born on February 15, 1924 to Charlotte and Herbert Wells in Tisdale, Saskatchewan and spent his younger years in Tisdale and Carragana, Saskatchewan. At the age of 16, Le moved to the Rainy River district to work for J.A Mathieu in logging camps. Leon then served in the Armed Forces with the 18th Manitoba Reconnaissance and later with the Armoured Corps during WWII. Leon graduated for the University of Manitoba in 1947 with a Diploma in Dairying. He then returned to the Rainy River District working at the LaVallee Creamery until 1951. He then was employed by the Ontario Minnesota Pulp and Paper Mill where he worked for 36 accident-free years with the last 17 years as Power House Operator, retiring in 1987. Leon had his pilots license and an airplane, an enjoyment he enthusiastically shared with family and friends whether sightseeing, fishing, or hauling supplies (or the winter ice crew) to Holden's Cameron Lake Lodge which he operated with his wife Nell in the late 1960’s. Le had many fond memories of good times spent with fellow aviator, Clifford Larry, and of his years at Rosie Jobst boarding house. Le was always ready and willing to give a helping hand to family, friends and causes. His retirement passion was volunteering for the grooming of the Fort Frances Eighth Street Trails which he did meticulously until his health declined. He was also a dedicated member of the Sabre/Lakers Hockey Fan Club; Royal Canadian Legion, Fort Frances Flying Club, and the Fort Frances Sportsmen’s Club. Le’s travels included annual trips to the Oshkosh Fly-Ins where he met wonderful life-long friends.
Le was predeceased by his parents, first wife, Harriet, his son William, sisters; Edith and Evelyne, his brother Lawrence, nephew Scott, great niece Karen and brothers in-law; Clayton, Ross and Earl.
Le leaves to cherish his memory, daughter Susan (Brad) Weum, stepchildren; Nioma, Buck, Gary and Terralyne Holden, Valerie Shelton, Judith Dubuc, Lori Herseth and their families, nieces; Charlotte (Bernard) Gordon, Darlene Lanning, nephews; Wade Power, Ron Lanning and their families, as well as many cousins, grandchildren, great grandchildren and a great great granddaughter.
A graveside service will be held at the Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances, Ontario on Thursday, September 9th, 2021 at 10:30 am followed by a luncheon at the Fort Frances Royal Canadian Legion.
