

Rachel was born on Saturday, September 16, 1916 in Finland, Ontario, the first of four girls.
As a young adult she worked at bush camps as a bookkeeper and sometimes had to cook for the workers. Rachel had lived in small towns and cities like Toronto, Sudbury and Thunder Bay. Rachel moved back to Finland and ran the Finland Co-op Store for years. Here she met and married Garnet and moved to his farm. Later they moved to run Big Pine Lake Camp. After some years they sold the camp and moved to Nestor Falls.
During their years together Garnet and Rachel traveled to many U.S. States and Rachel went to Finland, Europe a few times to see relatives. After her husband was badly injured they moved to Emo where she lived for many years before going to Rainycrest. In her younger years she enjoyed square-dancing with her husband. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, painting and making her own square dancing dresses. She was member of the Senior Citizens 60 Plus Club in Emo, and the Scandinavian Club.
Rachel is survived by her sister Verna and husband Alex Gawryluk of Fort Frances, sister-in-law Siiri Gallinger of Emo, many nieces and nephews, and step-daughter Genevieve and husband Bob Rogers of Red Lake and family.
She was predeceased by her husband Garnet, her parents Victor and Hannah Bloom, her sister Milja and husband John Kangas, nephew Dennis Kangas, sister Inkeri and husband Gordon Galbraith and brothers-in-law Taisto Ellmen, Taisto Johnson, and Percy Gallinger.
A celebration of Rachel’s life will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Knox United Church in Emo, Ontario with Reverend Frances Flook officiating.
Interment will take place in the Finland Cemetery in Finland, Ontario at a later date.
