It is with profound heartache that the family of Scott Smith announces his passing on Saturday March 19, 2022 in Mitaanjigamiing First Nation.

Scott was born on October 22, 1991 in Fort Frances, ON to Derek and Patty Smith. He grew up in Mitaanjigamiing First Nation, while he did spend some time in Naicatchewenin First Nation, Mitaanjigamiing was home. He was a smart young man who could do anything he set his mind to, he proved this when, upon discovering he was going to be a father, he finished his schooling. He completed 8 credits in 2 months so he could join the workforce and provide for his family. He worked at various construction jobs as well as did maintenance for the community. Scott was very traditional and enjoyed singing, hand drumming, attending sweats, dancing and sharing his stories. He loved to volunteer and fish. He adored his siblings.

He will be greatly missed by his son Robert Taylor Smith and his mother Dawn (Duckie); father Derek (Carrie); mother Patty; stepfather Brian Wayash Sr.; stepmother Eunice Johnson; siblings Dakota, Logan, Colby and Corbin Smith, Brian Jr., Kayla, Ashley Deanna, Ty and Chantel Wayash; grandmother Mary Natawance; mother-in-law Darlene Whitecrow; aunts and uncles Irene Smith, Tommy (Lorraine) Smith, Doris (Walter) Caribou, Lillian (Henry) Ottertail, Darlene Smith, Dennis (Judy) Smith, Brian (Roberta) Smith, Wanda Paishk, Charlene (Andrew) Smith, Sandra (Justin) Smith, Carol Quagon (Bill Wayash), Bonnie Shapwaykeesic, Denise Quagon, Edwin Natawance (Janice Henderson) as well as numerous cousins.

Scott was predeceased by his grandparents Billy and Sally Smith, Peter Quagon and Joe Natawance; father-in-law John Cochrane; uncle Robert Smith; cousin Zachary Councillor and great grandmother Annie McGinnis.

A traditional wake will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2022 at the Mitaanjigamiing First Nation Community Hall from 3 p.m.

A traditional funeral ceremony will held on Friday, March 25, 2022 at 10 a.m. at the Mitaanjigamiing First Nation Community Hall. Elder Tommy Councillor will officiate with interment in the Mitaanjigamiing First Nation Cemetery.

The pallbearers will be Alex Cochrane, Derrick Cochrane, Aidan Cochrane, Raymond Johnson, Chad Smith, Dillon Smith and Andrew Morrison.

The honourary pallbearers will be Travis Smith, Ty Wayash, Tye Jourdain, Dakota Smith, Brian Wayash Sr., Javiner McGinnis, John Councillor, William Councillor and Nathaniel Councillor.
