It is with our deepest sadness to announce the passing of our dearly beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, niece and best friend on the morning of Thursday, January 6, 2011 at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Her loving husband Nelson of 27 years will miss her so much. She is a mother to her son Robert of Winnipeg, MB., and daughter Rene of Kenora, ON., and two grandchildren, Jordan and Dakota Ferriera.
She enjoyed her time doing fun activities with her family such as camping in the summer, fishing, and boating. She always put her family first to share her precious time and love with them. She grew up embracing her traditional ways and lifestyle. Sylvia was greatly influenced by her surviving grandmother, Mrs. Evelyn Morrison and Aunt Annie Wayash.
She worked with various groups, and recently with Migizi Trreatment Centre in Kenora. She gave of herself to others in need. She was born on January 24, 1964 in Fort Frances, Ontario to the late Jane Morrison and Billy Mensen of Seine River First Nation. She is the eldest of six siblings, and is survived by her three brothers, Gerald of Seine River First Nation, ON., Donald of Thunder Bay, ON., and “Bill” William of Regina; her sisters, Leona of Regina, SK., and Diane and husband Terrence Ottertail of Winnipeg, MB.; cousins, Pamela, Roy, Edward, Sandra, Brian Jr., Colin, Gary, Deborah, Rudy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents Billy Mensen and Jane Morrison; grandfather, Andrew Morrison Sr., one twin brother; niece, Rebecca Jane Perreault; and uncles, Roy, Andrew Jr., Doyle, Edward, Joseph and James Mensen.
A traditional burial service was held on Monday, January 10, 2011 in the morning at the Seine River Firsts Nation Hall with Elder Joseph Morrison officiating.
Interment took place in the Seine River First Nation Cemetery in Seine River First Nation, Ontario.
Active pallbearers were Brian Wayash, Bill Wayash Jr., Roy Morrison, Edward Morrison, Lester Atatise Sr., Robert Atatise, Brian Atatise and Ryan Potson.
