With deepest sadness, we share the loss of Dr. Barton (“Bart”) B. Hartman who passed away peacefully on Saturday July 6th 2024, at the age of 89, with his loving wife of 40 years, Christina Hartman,at his side. Bart was born on September 2, 1934, in Jersey City, NJ and was raised in Quakertown, PA with his parents, Herbert and Dorothy, and his (surviving) sister, Dr. Faith Hartman Cohen, resident of Philadelphia.
Bart attended Moravian College (Bethlehem, PA) with the help of a tennis scholarship. He went on to complete medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. He did his residency at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia.
During the Berlin Crisis in 1961 he was drafted as Captain with the US Army Intelligence Center in Ft. Holabird, MD. While serving in the Army, he and his first wife, Mary Hartman, celebrated their first child. , Christine(Rich, recently deceased) Milanese.
He then completed his residency in OB/GYN at the Pennsylvania hospital where his second child, Brett (Sarah) Hartman, was born.
When it came time to choose his professional path, Bart decided to set up an OB/GYN practice in a city where he could play year-round tennis—Ft. Lauderdale where his youngest child Julia (George ) Wilcox was born.
He remained in Fort Lauderdale and practiced at Holy Cross Hospital for the next 33 years.
In addition to being a highly respected physician, Bart pursued a wide range of hobbies and interests, always with exacting attention to detail. He immersed himself in “Formula Ford” auto racing and learned how to rebuild engines and weld. He became an accomplished photographer, developing film in a darkroom that he built himself. Many of the gallery-quality images he captured came from his Formula Ford races, and from his hikes with his family in the mountains around Aspen, Colorado. And, as his father before him, he was a skilled woodworker. In fact, there wasn’t much he couldn’t do.
In 1981,Bart met the love of his life, Christina Allord (along with her son, Errol, who passed away in 2020). They were married in 1984 and enjoyed a life filled with travel, hiking with family, and rescuing dogs. Although highly accomplished, Bart was never one to promote his own achievements. Right up to his final days, however, his face would light up with pride and love when it came to the achievements of his seven grandchildren (Lauren, Rachel, Jessica, Kylie, Hailey, Benjamin, and Nicholas).
In many ways, Bart paved the way for their ongoing success and happiness.
