He grew up in Utica, New York. His family was poor but he didn’t know it when he was young. His parents were loving and his six brothers and sisters were close. He moved with his family to Miami where he graduated from high school. He became a successful, self made business man beginning with Gulf Oil and later opening a chain of pawn shops. He earned his Real Estate and Broker’s license and invested in real estate. He later opened two jewelry stores. In later years he reduced his businesses to one pawn store specializing in gun sales. That store remains open to this day and is managed by his eldest daughter. He was active in several business clubs such as the Kiwanis and Rotary, chambers of commerce of several cities and different service organizations. He was a contributor to many organizations and schools such as the Boy Scouts of America, Miami and Humana Hospital’s Special Olympics, BCC Scholarship Fund, Mc Arthur High School, Walter C. Young Resource Center, Miramar High School, Carol City High School, Save A Pet Society, Adopt A Pet and the Friends of Animals. He was a partner with Crimestoppers, was a past President of the District 1 Florida Pawnbrokers, member of National Association of Realtors, the NRA, the National Pawnbrokers Association, the Florida Pawnbrokers Association, the Unified Sportsmen of Florida, the Jewelry Board of Trade, and the Hollywood Rifle & Pistol Club just to name a few. He owned boats most of his life and loved the ocean and fishing. He trained with the Coast Guard Auxiliary when he was a young man, and was a member of the Cousteau Society and Green Peace.
For the past 46 years he has been married to Donna - the love of his life. He and Donna have owned motor homes and have traveled around our country and Canada visiting friends, relatives and landmarks. They have also traveled around the world. He accomplished more things in his lifetime than most people would do in five lifetimes. He visited Victoria Falls, saw the peak of Kilimanjaro, cruised the Nile River and visited the Valley of the Kings, toured the plains of Africa, viewed the Cape of Good Hope, actually went into diamond mines, cruised the Hawaiian Islands, climbed the stairs to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, went to the top of the Eiffel Tower, walked the Coliseum in Rome, rode in gondolas in Venice, fished the Bimini Islands, rode the Key West Conch Train, rode horseback to the top of Big Bend National Park, explored the Carlsbad Caverns, climbed ladders up to the Pueblo cliff dwellers lived, snow-skied the slopes in Colorado, toured and camped Yellowstone National Park, the Tetons & Yosemite, rafted 127 miles of the Colorado River rapids, toured Mexico City and Tijuana, rode the cable cars in San Francisco, drove the entire coast of California, visited the Hearst castle and Carmel City in California, drive a car through the mighty redwood trees in Oregon, toured Canada and the Canadian Rockies, drove a snow mobile over a Canadian iceberg, visited Disney World, cruised and toured the waters and cities of Alaska and came within 30 miles of Russia, visited an Eskimo village, cruised the islands of Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and Bahamas, went deep sea fishing in Mexico, cruised the Greek Islands and Turkey, visited Branson, Missouri and Las Vegas, saw shows on New York’s Broadway, visited Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, cruised the Galapagos Islands, fished in the Dry Tortugas Islands and the 10,000 islands, went to the top of the Empire State Building, visited a Detroit Ford Auto Manufacturing plant, cruised through the Panama Canal. On top of all of that, he helped raise four daughters.
In spite of his worldly travels and businesses, he appreciated simple things. . . a ham sandwich and a cold beer, Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonalds and watching the Miami Dolphins play on T.V. Family was important to him all of his life. His family, cat and our community will greatly miss him.
