Evelyn was born in Richmond, Virginia to Ernest Mayo Jr. and Norma Smith Mayo in August of 1946. Upon the passing of her mother, she was also raised by her stepmother, Anna Patterson Mayo. She attended Richmond Professional Institute, which merged with Virginia Commonwealth University, where she studied Interior Design, a passion she used in all her future homes. In June of 1968, upon his graduation, she married Ken Christian, and they moved to Wilmington, Delaware to pursue his career. She worked in administration for a few years for Blue Cross before stepping away to dedicate herself to the care of their children and home. She was a loving wife and mother, a true nurturer with a talent for creative cooking. She was a room mother and cub scout den mother during her children’s early school years. She was also a gifted artist filling their homes with art and murals as well as selling her work at various art fairs for a time. She volunteered for many years, working behind the scenes throughout the year and at the event itself for the Wilmington Flower Market, an annual community festival that raised funds to support many charitable children’s organizations across Delaware. In the 1990’s, they moved to Perryville, Maryland to live alongside the Chesapeake Bay. When the time came, she enjoyed being a grandmother and building wonderful memories with her grandchildren such as baking and decorating Christmas cookies. In their retirement, she and her husband experienced adventures traveling and living on their boat for several years, ultimately settling down in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
Evelyn is survived by her husband, Ken Christian; daughter and son-in-law, April and David Weiser; son and daughter-in-law, Brandon and Sarah Christian; grandchildren, Madeline, Savannah, and Arden Weiser, and Skylar and Taylor Christian; and sister, Charlene Egeland, as well as extended family members.
The family expresses their gratitude to Denise Reed, who has been a wonderful aide for several years, not only taking care of Evelyn during her long battle with Alzheimer’s but also supporting and caring for Ken so that he could get some respite as well.
Evelyn’s family celebrates her life as she rests in peace and rises in glory.
