Frederick Robert Elder, 97, passed away on January 28, 2025. He was born on January 14, 1928, in New York City to Frederick William Elder and Catherine Wehinger. Raised in the heart of the city alongside his sister, the late Marilyn Elder Van Durmen, Fred developed a deep love for his hometown and its sports teams.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Fred’s love for sports started early. As a teenager, he worked at Steve’s Concession Stands, selling peanuts and Cracker Jack at the Polo Grounds and Ebbets Field. This experience sparked his lifelong loyalty to the New York Giants—both baseball and football—and to the Brooklyn Dodgers, even after their move to California. His passion for sports never waned, and he often reminisced about the glory days of New York’s golden sports era.
Fred’s love story with his wife, Anita, began on the streets of their NYC neighborhood while they were playing street stickball. Their connection was immediate, and they married in 1948. Together, they raised four children: Frederick Jan Elder (Joanne), Brian Joseph Elder, Josanne Elder Harris (James Houston), and Germain Francis Elder. He was also a proud grandfather to Heather Wottreng (Michael), Kimberly Harris, Kelly Harris, Rick Elder, Michael Elder, Lisa Hart, Michele Distel, and Robert Elder.
Fred’s life was shaped by his dedication to family, his love of sports, and his service to his country. After graduating high school, he proudly served in the United States Army, stationed in Japan from 1946 to 1947. Upon returning home, Fred settled into a managerial career that kept him grounded in the city he loved. Though a man of few words, those who knew him best remember him for his quiet strength, quick wit, and unwavering loyalty to his loved ones.
Fred is survived by his children, grandchildren, and many others who were touched by his kindness and humor. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Marilyn, and his former wife, Anita. His legacy of love and humor will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
