James Y. Chen, MD, died suddenly on July 3rd, 2022, of natural causes. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gloria, his son, John (daughter-in-law, Catherine), his daughter, Joanna (son-in-law, Peter), his son, Andrew (daughter-in-law, Elise), and grandchildren, Alexander, Isabella, James, Eliana, Deborah, Agape, John, and Nehemiah. He was 85 years old.
Dr. Chen was born in Zui-Nah, Taiwan, on September 15, 1936. The oldest surviving son of his parents, James had 11 younger brothers and sisters. He was a good student, often appointed to be class captain by his teacher. When he graduated, he followed his father's footsteps into medicine at Kaohsiung Medical College in Taiwan. As an internal medicine physician at McKay Memorial Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan, Dr. Chen specialized in endocrinology and, in particular, treating patients suffering from diabetes and thyroid diseases. He was a good doctor, but what his patients remember of him was his kindness and caring nature.
In 1958, James was introduced to a beautiful girl, Gloria, through a matchmaking relative. He finally convinced her to marry him in 1961 by promising to love her forever. He fulfilled that promise.
After immigrating to the United States in 1971 to train in anesthesiology, James and Gloria with their children made their home first in Chicago, then in Ft. Lauderdale. It was here that they grew in their spiritual lives at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church under the pastoral leadership of Dr. D. James Kennedy. James served as Deacon at CRPC. He led a Bible Study for the Taiwanese American community in South Florida which eventually grew into the Evangelical Formosan Church. He and Mom's greatest hope was to bring the gospel to the people of Taiwan. They hosted several pastors from Taiwan in our home so they can train in Evangelism Explosion.
In their retirement, they were blessed with good health. They traveled to Taiwan, Texas, California and enjoyed visiting new destinations until Covid. We are so heartbroken to say goodbye to our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, but we know he is at home with Jesus and we will be reunited again.
Funeral services will commence on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at 3:00 at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, 5555 North Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33308.
The memorial service will be live streamed at https://crpc.org/live/. It will also be available for viewing at a later date on Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church Youtube channel, https://www.youtube.com/c/CoralRidge.
