Jeneta Bernard was born on February 23, 1933, in the fishing village of Old Harbour Bay, St Catherine, Jamaica, to Lydia O’Conner and Calvin Walker. She was the oldest of ten children.
Mummy, as Barbara, Jacquie and Clive would call her, was a very special lady. She earned this title due to the excellent qualities she exhibited during her lifetime. She was a loving and caring mother, faithful and loving wife, dependable provider, an accomplished chef, and a very good dancer. There was a lot more to our beloved mother and friend. She was a God-fearing woman, and she drilled the fear of God into us. Yes, you could not mess with Mummy. As the saying goes “she little but she Talawa.”
So, now let us focus on what made Mummy a very special lady and a fascinating woman.
Jeneta came from humble beginnings in life, and like all of us who were born down the Bay, she attended Old Habour Bay Primary school.
Jeneta, like many diligent women from down the Bay, helped her mother to take care of younger siblings while she attended sewing classes with the aspirations of becoming a seamstress.
However, a big change was to occur in her life and like the fairy tale, Cinderella met her Prince Charming. Yes, she met Ezra, our father. It was not long before she had Barbara and Clive and later, Jacquie, thus began a very productive life together as husband and wife.
In the mid-1950s, they both went to England and became a part of what is now called the Windrush generation and like many of that generation they worked very hard in the cold and damp conditions in 1950s, 60s, 70s Britain in order to provide a better life for their family, both in England and in Jamaica and they certainly succeeded, because Mummy put her hand to hard work just as she knew how. She worked in two hospitals in Nottingham and then at Thorns Electronics in Nottingham. Her hard work paid off because they both managed to buy their home in Mapperley, one of the most opulent areas in Nottingham where we happily grew up and which also gave us a good start in education.
In the late 1980s (December 1987), Mummy and her Husband Ezra emigrated to the US and eventually settled in Miramar, Florida, where they continued to work hard and enjoy an excellent quality of life.
So, in summary, Mummy lived an exceptionally long and productive life. She lived to the age of ninety-two and tomorrow would have been her 93rd birthday.
Our beloved mother, sister, aunt, friend, has left a legacy and a heritage to be envied.
She is survived by her three children, Barbara, Clive and Jacquie.
Grandchildren; Deanne, Gavin, Basil Jr, Nadine, Daniel, Jonathan and Grace.
Great grandchildren; Mya, Levi, Renae, Joshua, Ruben, Honor, and a 7th Grandchild born just last week 13th of February.
She is also survived by her siblings, Dassy, Peggy, Carol and Tony and a host of other family members and friends.
So, we can give Thanks to God for the long life he gifted our beloved mother, this very special Lady, Jeneta Victoria Bernard, now resting safely in God’s memory.
