

Eler was born on March 18, 1948 in Torbeck, Haiti to his mother Lea Alexandre and father Mathias Genois, where he lived for the early part of his life before immigrating to the United States in 1990. Eler married Marie Gilberte Alexandre in 1979. Starting in 2015, he spent most his time in Haiti.
Eler is known by his contemporaries as a dedicated public servant. In Haiti, he served as a State Civil Officer for more than a decade. He was most notable for his community involvement. For example, he volunteered his time and resources for the completion of multiple construction projects in Haiti. He also promoted several youth groups such Herjmafrogap, Samba and others. His main interest was assisting others. Eler was raised Catholic. He worked very hard throughout his life to provide for his family. Eler always said that his joy of witnessing the achievements of his children overshadows his disappointments. His love, sense of humor, empathy and wisdom were therapeutic and a lighthouse for many.
Joseph “Eler” Alexandre died of complications following a stroke on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at 8:43 PM at the age of 71. He is survived by his wife Marie Gilberte Alexandre; his siblings Oswald Genois, Marie Clauset Charles, Eunie Estriplet, Roselaure Berneche, and Marie Eveline Lubin; his children Fanfan, Jean Mari, Fabiola, Paul, Jennifer, Francois, Junie, Gerard and Sadchele and his grandchildren Pierre, Fapianey, Andrew, William, Leicah, Malakay, Rodney, Robihana, Jeremiah and Gnova Alexandre.
Eler’s viewing service will be held on Saturday March 21, 2020 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The memorial will be on Sunday March 22, 2020 at 10:00 am. Both will take place at Forest Lawn Funeral Home at 2401 Southwest 64th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL.
