Joyce Marie Carey, 82 of Hollywood, Florida passed away on July 8, 2024. Joyce was born on May 27, 1942 in Clifton, New Jersey; the daughter of Edward and Mildred (Duffy) Oberle, sister to Theodore Oberle and adopted sister Lindy Oberle and adopted brother Barry Oberle. She moved to the South Florida area in the mid 1950’S and graduated from Miami Senior High School. She worked as a bookkeeper for many years until retiring in 1999. Her jobs included years with Woolworth, Prize Warehouse and Brandsmart, among others. She was a member of St David Catholic Church of Davie, Florida, Red Hat Society and former member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Opa-locka, Florida. Her family remembers fondly that their mother was a friend to everyone. Her home was always open to her children’s friends and neighbors. She often fed them, and was known to be a great cook. She also enjoyed sewing, often times making clothing or costumes for her daughters and friends. She was the area Brownie then Girl Scout leader and worked the Miami-Dade Optimist Club concession stands during softball and football games. She prioritized family over work to make sure her daughters, their friends and their friend’s families were the center of attention cultivating a large extended family throughout their years. They lived in a small hometown, in a small home in which her solitude and past time for herself came from cleaning the house, laundry, shopping with her daughters and grandchildren, gardening and pruning her rose bushes.
Her mother once shared that they gave her the name Joyce because of the word “JOY” in her name hoping she would bring joy to those around her. She honored her parents well spreading her laughter and joy. She was a very good daughter to both her parents and loved her siblings, family and extended family dearly.
She endured her husband’s love of car racing at the Hialeah Speedway and traveled cities and states to race. Camping with friends was enjoyed but air conditioning was preferred. Fun times. She was a supportive wife but more importantly was the compass of the family.
She was affectionally called Great Grandma, Grandma, Grams and Grammy and glowed with excitement at their beckon call. She attended all their church events, school events, occasionally picked them up from school and often cooked or baked their favorite foods. On many occasions she rode a bike with them, swam in the pool with them, played board games with them, played children card games, watched them play outside, watched them sing, dance all while always laughing, coaching, praising and smiling. She loved her grandchildren dearly. Not to mention her God-daughter who melted her heart with the name Aunt Joyce. She found any occasions to be by her God-daughter’s side along with her God-daughter’s two brothers.
Joyce leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughters, Mimi Benton and her husband Berry of Davie, Florida, Didi Reyes-Greenstein and her husband Marc of Weston, Florida, two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, her sister-in-law, her 30-year-old granddaughter and her real love of 57 years second husband John Carey who passed away in 2008.
Funeral Service for Joyce include mass of Christian burial at St David Catholic Church on Saturday July 20, 2024 beginning at 10:00 am.
