For the three years that I knew you I understood who you were and what you stood for and what you meant to the family .... I can only aspire to live up to your legacy of leadership, love and dedication ..... I will miss you but will reference you in my future trails as a way north and a guide.

I don't know if it's too late to add a message at this point.
I've had a very hard time getting myself to write anything on this page. There are too many emotions involved. I found the emotion that has been haunting me and keeping me from writing most, is guilt. I feel guilty for not spending more time with a man who had always done so much for me. I feel guilty for not going with him on his final 2 cruises that I knew he enjoyed so much, even after he tried so hard to convince me to go. But mostly I feel guilty for not realizing how sick he was at the end and not urging him to go to the hospital. I feel like I let my family down. And it's killing me.  I mean, how can I work in a profession of health care, when I couldn't even ensure the health of one of the people I love most? 
This is how I've felt since I lost you, "Welo"... 
The last thing I said to you was that you've got to get better because I want you to help me coach your great grand kids in baseball later that week. And you said "God willing." That has stuck with me. Those were 2 of the last 5 words you said to me. Just before I left you said, "Love you too." 
I still took your great grand kids to play baseball that week and was hoping some how you were watching. 
I wasn't ready to lose you, but maybe you were ready to go. In a way I'm relieved you went the way you did. I know you didn't want tubes down your throat or bulky masks smothering your face. There are worse ways to go than in your own bed.
One of the things that I regret most is we never got a chance to cook oxtail together. It seems stupid but it was something we spoke of often and never did. The last time we cooked together was Thanksgiving. We prepared mojo, side by side, we both dipped our pinkies in it together and simultaneously looked at each other and said in unison "More pepper" and laughed our asses off. I have you to thank for my passion to cook, my intimate understanding of the sport of baseball, my overwhelming appreciation of a good scotch, and my undying commitment to our family. These were among the things you were known most for and I'm so grateful that you shared them as well as countless other things with me. You are deeply missed.

Abuelo you are truly an inspiration to us all and you will be missed greatly.  I'll never forget everything you've taught me.  Your love, laughter, wisdom and strength is a legacy we will carry on.  May you rest in Peace with my beautiful Abuela who is always in my thoughts and forever in my heart.  I know your souls will find each other and rejoice in everlasting peace and love with our father, the son and the holy spirit.

Almost every day, I fight the urge to pick up the phone and call you.  I keep thinking you're there in your little apartment, hanging with Irma, catching a Western, or cooking up something tasty.  I keep thinking I can call you to tell you about Antonio's latest shenanigans, or--believe it or not--to ask you to console me though dealing with your death.  For some reason, I keep thinking you're the only one who would know the perfect thing to say.  

Bottom line: there is something within me that doesn't allow me to believe you are gone.  I think that's because the truth is you aren't "gone"; you are here, right here, living through us, your family, your legacy.  From leaving us bits of wisdom about life to passing down the recipe for Thanksgiving turkey, you inspired us all, making us better, fuller, stronger, equipping us for life and its challenges.  Oh wait, and let's not forget how Antonio and I inherited your elf ears! :-) 

Even though you aren't here in body to talk me through dealing with this loss, I know I will be okay because you taught me how to be okay.  I miss you more than I can express.  Every time I miss you too much and allow myself to slip into sadness, I remember your firm, warm hugs, your open heart, your awesome sense of humor.  I think of Thanksgivings to come where we'll enjoy Turkey "a la Papy."  I look at my son's beautiful ears, his little inheritance from "Abuelo Viejo."  I look in the mirror and I see your living flesh and blood.  

I love you.  I'm so happy and SO lucky you are my grandfather.

Abuelo, 
I cannot express both the sorrow I feel in losing you and the gratitude I have for the life you shared with all of us. I remember like yesterday all the great times we spent together: The times when I was a little boy and you teaching us to swim and play baseball with your old jai-alai balls at your old house, days at the campo, sitting on the cooler between you and Tio on the road trips to Tennessee, to the cruise we went on just the two of us only 7 months ago. 

I remember when we were too young to understand hard work and diligence you would get frustrated and tell us, "I wish I could put my blood in your veins so you guys would have a little bit of what I have and feel inside". I didn't quite understand as a young child what that meant, but now as a man, I fully understand and know that your blood runs deep in my veins! You are a man that I will always admire, and if one day I am half the man you were to our family, I'll consider myself a great man. 
 
I think of you all the time and wonder if you can hear my thoughts. You not physically being here still doesn't feel real, but I hope you feel my love for you every day as I feel yours. I will think of you always, when I am teaching the next generation of our family the lessons you taught us, when I'm drinking Black Label or Dewar's, when I see an old western movie/John Wayne/Clint Eastwood, even when I say something nasty that my Mom doesn't like but I know you're laughing! You are forever in my heart Abuelo and I will live all my days with you in my mind, heart and blood running strong through my veins!

Even though you are no longer here on Earth, you live on within all of us; your family.  It was you that instilled in us the importance of family and cherished friends.  Your love of music and sports, your humor and, most of all, your love of life and family will go on forevermore as we, your family, pass on your legacy, always remembering where it began.
