Laura Schrage, our beloved Mother and Granny, passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at the age of 91. Laura was born on August 12, 1933 in Porto Alegre, Brazil and in 1969 immigrated to New York with her husband, Friedrich “Fritz" Schrage, and their three children: Anne Lori, Karin, and Charles. Laura and Fritz embodied the true American Dream. In a foreign country where she did not speak the language, Laura not only raised her children, but worked at Banco Real to help provide for her family. In 1989, Laura retired from the banking industry and helped care for her grandchildren full-time. In 1998, Laura and Fritz retired to Weston, Florida, where they were surrounded by family.
Laura experienced great joy in her life, in seeing her grandchildren grow up and three great-grandchildren be born. She also experienced immense sorrow at the loss of her son Charles in 2007, followed by her husband 10 months later. Even through heartbreak, Laura continued to be the Matriarch of her family, as she had always been. Laura was the unifying force in not only her family, but neighborhood and circle of friends as well. Laura welcomed everyone with unconditional acceptance, love, and support.
Laura leaves a legacy that will never be replaced nor forgotten. Laura is survived by her two daughters (Anne Lori Escobar and Karin Schrage), daughter-in-law (Magda Pastro Schrage), six grandchildren (Tatiana Schrage de Oliveira, Juliana Schrage de Oliveira, Alessandra Escobar Wlosek, Adriana Schrage Duque, Lucas Schrage, and Nicholas Schrage), and three great-grandchildren (Roman Alexander Duque, Aiden Wlosek, and Alayna Duque).
