Thomas Joseph Butler Jr., 66, of Fort Lauderdale, passed away this past Friday, leaving behind a legacy woven deeply into the community he loved and served for a lifetime. Born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Tommy never strayed far from the waters and streets that shaped him. His roots ran deep, and his presence was felt by everyone who had the joy of knowing him.
A proud supporter of Cardinal Gibbons High School, Tommy poured countless hours, energy, and heart into the school even as an alum. He was a steady, familiar face: the kind of community member who didn’t just show up, but truly showed up. His generosity, loyalty, and passion made him a pillar in every sense of the word.
For more than 30 years, Tommy worked alongside his brother John at Bodax Foundations, where he served as Vice President and General Manager. He showed up every day with steadiness and pride in what he did, helping guide the company with the same reliability he brought to every part of his life.
Tommy loved the outdoors and found his happiest days on the water. Whether he was fishing, booze cruising on the Pathfinder, or spending time in the Florida Keys, he was at peace under the sun and salt air. He appreciated good food, good laughter, and especially good friends. His friendships were lifelong and deeply cherished; they were an extension of his family, and he loved them fiercely.
Tommy came from a family of 7 siblings, all incredibly close. He shared a special bond with each of them. He is preceded in death by his sisters, Kathy and Veronica, and his father, Thomas Joseph Butler Sr. There is comfort in imagining them reunited now.
Thomas Joseph Butler III, son of Tommy and the late Ina Butler, survives Tommy as his only son. Tommy loved Thomas deeply and would have moved mountains to ensure his son’s happiness.
He will be remembered as a devoted brother, a beloved uncle, a loyal friend, and the kind of man who made life lighter just by being in the room. Tommy was funny, warm, endlessly fun to be around, and someone who lived fully and loved deeply.
He leaves behind a family who adored him, friends who will forever miss his humor and presence, and a community better for having had him.
May his memory be a blessing, and may those who loved him carry forward his spirit of generosity, joy, and connection.
In honor of Tommy and in lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to Cardinal Gibbons Athletics.
