With the heaviest of hearts, we announce the passing of Barbara Anne Fuechsel, of Fort Myers, Florida, formerly of Harwood, Maryland. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, aunt, and friend, Barbara passed away on Tuesday May 26, 2026 at 11:53 PM, surrounded by the family whose lives she shaped with her deepest love and unwavering strength. She faced a ten-year battle with ovarian cancer with extraordinary courage, never allowing her illness to dim her spirit. Through countless cycles of treatment and recovery, she met every challenge with resilience, grace, dignity, and hope. Between the hardest moments, she embraced life fully — enjoying the beach, creating art, and cherishing time with her beloved family and friends.
Barbara was born on November 3, 1957, in Washington, DC. She was a treasured daughter and a cherished granddaughter, joyfully welcomed into a family delighted to have a little girl to adore. Her grandfather proudly brought her to his office, while her grandmother taught her to cook and sew, early lessons that shaped her creativity, confidence, and independence. As a child, she spent magical stretches of time in Cocoa Beach, where her father worked on spacecraft launches. The ocean, the excitement of the space program, and the sense of possibility surrounding those early years remained with her throughout her life.
Barbara married the love of her life, Jerry, and together they shared 40 wonderful years. Soulmates and best friends, they stood beside each other through every season of life. As an incredible mother, Barbara created a warm and joyful home for her children, Richard and Kelly, a place where friends and family felt comfortable staying, laughing, and being part of the family’s orbit. Her joy only grew with the arrival of her granddaughter, Kayla, who lovingly called her “Gaga.” Their bond mirrored the joyful closeness Barbara had experienced with her own grandparents, but with a depth uniquely their own. They were so alike, drawn to the same joys, fascinated by the same things, and happiest simply in each other’s company. They were truly two peas in a pod.
A lifelong learner with a brilliant mind, Barbara earned her MBA in Information Systems/Security from Loyola University Maryland, her BS in Computer Science from the University of Maryland Global Campus, and was a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). Her distinguished career spanned more than four decades across NASA and Marriott International, supporting missions, programs, and systems that shaped space exploration and enterprise-level cybersecurity. She built a legacy of intelligence, leadership, and service.
Before her early retirement due to her diagnosis, Barbara served as the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Integrated Program Team Lead and Deputy IT Manager for ASRC Federal under the PAAC contract at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. She led the JPSS PAAC team and managed the IT systems supporting the JPSS program, while also serving under the Chief Security Officer. She was an exceptional manager, mentor, and colleague, forming lasting friendships with those fortunate enough to work alongside her.
Prior to that, Barbara served as a Project Management Coach, also under the PAAC contract, mentoring project managers, guiding requirements compliance, and providing support on nonflight IT projects across the center. Earlier in her career, she served as the Hubble Space Telescope Technical Management Information System (TMIS) Operations Manager, supporting one of NASA’s most iconic missions. She managed TMIS operations, developed procedures, administered Sun workstations and Oracle databases, and maintained security for more than 1,000 users.
Between her NASA roles, Barbara spent a decade at Marriott International as the Director of the Enterprise Security Initiatives Program Management Office (PMO), leading the company’s response to emerging Payment Card Industry requirements and protecting customer and associate credit card data. She built and led the PMO, mentoring staff and driving enterprisewide security initiatives.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Barbara was a gifted performing and visual artist, a vocalist and guitarist whose musical gifts were nurtured from age 13 by her father. She performed professionally before choosing a career path that would support her family. She was also a painter, potter, and jewelry maker whose creations reflected her eye for beauty and detail. Barbara loved boating with her family, spending time at the beach, and above all, shelling. She shared that passion with the public as a Shell Ambassador for the Sanibel Shell Museum, where she educated visitors with enthusiasm and expertise. At the heart of her home was the joy of cooking together as a family, a tradition Barbara cherished. Her special holiday dishes and the nourishing recipes she perfected over the years will continue to be lovingly shared, carrying her spirit into every meal and gathering. She was the ultimate friend, forming deep connections wherever she went and leaving a lasting, loving impact on countless lives.
Barbara is survived by her devoted husband, Jerry Bernstein; her loving daughter, Kelly Catlett, and son-in-law, Kevin Catlett; and her cherished granddaughter, Kayla. She is also survived by her parents, Nancy O’Brien and Charles “Chuck” Fuechsel and his wife, Carol. She leaves behind her beloved niece, Melissa Constable and her husband, Zach, along with their daughter, Jocelynn; as well as her nephew, Patrick Fuechsel—each of whom held a special place in her heart. She is also survived by her son, Richard Butler, and her brother, David Fuechsel.
She leaves behind a legacy of courage, creativity, and boundless love. Her family will carry her spirit forward in the way they live and love, their cherished traditions, and the countless memories she gifted them. She was the center of her family’s world, and they are profoundly honored to have called her their own.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
