Charles "Charlie" Edward Sammis, Jr., age 93, of Fort Myers, Florida passed away on Friday, July 18, 2025. Charlie was born in The Bronx, NY and was a graduate of James Monroe High school. He was also a proud veteran of the United States Navy during the Korean War, serving on the aircraft carrier USS Wright (CVL-49) as a Boiler Operator. Like many of his peers in his home area of Clason Point, after the war he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Iona College in New Rochelle, NY.
As a Special Agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) he was assigned to offices in New York City, Mineola, NY, Pittsburgh, PA, Binghamton, NY, and for his last 10 years as the Resident Agent in Charge of the Syracuse, NY Field Office. After retiring from ATF, he moved south and became an investigator for the State of Florida’s Adult Protective Services program and later became a security officer at Lee Memorial Hospital.
His strong but gentle New York accent made it easy to understand why he was a life-long Yankees and Giants fan. He loved traveling and going on cruises around the world. He enjoyed going to Disney World and staying at all the resorts. If Charlie wasn't at the symphony, he was reading a mystery novel or spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a friend to many and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his long-time partner and loving wife Brenda, his sons Ed Sammis, John (Sue) Sammis, and Scott (Jenny) Sammis and his granddaughters Caitlin, Kyra, Haley, Madelyn, Maura, and Harriet as well as his step-grandson, Nic and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Eleanor Sammis, and sisters Ethel (Sammis) Middleton and Carol (Sammis) Hoffman.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations to be made in Charlie’s memory to the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches (youthranches.org).
A memorial visitation for Charles will be held Saturday, July 26, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Hodges-Kiser Funeral Home, 9231 Cypress Lake Drive, Fort Myers, FL 33919. Following the memorial visitation will be a memorial celebration of life service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at HODGES-KISER FUNERAL HOME, 9231 Cypress Lake Drive, Fort Myers, Florida 33919.
