

David Gene Verbrugge, 65, of Kanawha, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, November 19, 2025. Born on July 24, 1960, at Belmond Community Hospital in Belmond, Iowa, David was the beloved son of Rouletta Jane Van Pykeren and Nick Leroy Verbrugge.
David was a proud high-school graduate who went on to build a life defined by hard work, faith, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. For more than 20 years, he was a dedicated and valued employee at Everglades, where he was known for his reliability, integrity, and strong work ethic.
A faithful member of New Life Church, David’s passion for serving the Lord was evident in the way he lived his life. He treasured his role as a husband, son, brother, and grandpa, always placing his family’s needs above his own. On July 3, 2018, David married Maria Almeida, with whom he shared a deep and loving bond.
David enjoyed the simple joys of life—playing golf whenever he had the chance and spending Sundays watching football. Those moments brought him great happiness and were often shared with the people he cared about most.
David is survived by his father Nick Leroy Verbrugge, his loving wife, Maria Almeida; four stepchildren; and eleven cherished grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Paul Verbrugge, Carolyn Winegar, Joyce Morris, Tom Verbrugge, and Mark Verbrugge. His presence will be deeply missed and his memory forever treasured by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
A Gathering of Friends and Family will be held at Hodges Funeral Home at Lee Memorial Park, located at 12777 State Road 82, Fort Myers, Florida, 33913, on November 28, 2025, starting at 2:00 pm. The Funeral Service will follow on the same day at 3:00 pm.
