Herbert R. Sikes, Sr., 83, of Lehigh Acres (Alva), passed away Sunday, January 24, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Claxton, Georgia on March 1, 1937 to William and Queen Sikes.
Herbert R. Sikes was better known to family and friends as simply HR. HR became a member of the First Baptist Church of Alva on April 20, 1975. He loved his family and was especially good at spoiling the grandchildren and the great grandchildren. HR and Jane’s home was always bustling with family. Brother George Henderson loved HR and especially his BBQ which he requested on a regular basis.
HR was faithful, dependable, hardworking, described by many as the “Energizer Bunny”. He loved to spar back and forth with people. He called it “picking” but we understood it as how he had fun, and he enjoyed even more if you “picked” back.
We have heard the term, “Jack of all trades, and master of none.” HR was truly a jack of all trades and mastered most of them. He was the Chairmen of Building and Grounds Committee at the church, but a better description would have been “Minister of the Mower”. His work ethic and energy level were such that few could ever keep up with him, and if you helped him, he would hold you to the highest standard.
HR would be the first to arrive, and the last to leave when work needed to be done. He would help anyone that asked but would seldom ask for help in return. He was a generous man and will be missed by all!
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers: Larrick and Charles Sikes and his grandson, Gunnor Erickson. Herbert is survived by his wife, Geneva; his children: Margy Sinden, Randy Sikes Jr., Janeice (Troy) Schaefer and Patti Andersen; sisters: Sharon Boswell, Mary (Kenny) Smith, Melany (David Sanderford) Goodwin and Nona Drake; 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Alva 2790 Joel Blvd., Alva, FL 33920 on Friday, January 29th at 11:00 am. Private inurnment will be at a later date. Arrangements by Hodges Funeral Home at Lee Memorial Park. (239) 334-4880
