Marcus M. Cutler, Jr, 92, of Fort Myers, Florida passed away peacefully on Friday, April 19, 2024. Marcus who was born on September 5, 1931, to Marcus M. Cutler Sr. and Mary Agnes (Peterson) Cutler, spent his formative years on the 314 acre family farm in East Montpelier, Vermont. Every morning he and his father would go to about 15-20 different farms to pick up their milk in 40-qt containers and deliver it to the creamery. His patriotic spirit and familial bonds were tested on his 19th birthday when he received an active duty summons for the Korean War, alongside his brothers James and Frank. Sent to Virginia for a year of rigorous training, the trio faced another deployment to Munich, Germany, for the subsequent year, an experience that left an indelible mark on their young souls. Upon their return to Vermont in 1952, Marcus, guided by his experiences, chose not to reenlist, opting instead to forge a civilian path, carrying with him the lessons and memories of his military service.
Marcus married Charlotte LaCount in St. Augustine church in Montpelier, Vermont on August 29, 1953. They moved to Burlington, Vermont in 1967 and raised their family there. Mark and Charlotte both enjoyed a long career with the telephone company before retiring in the 1980s. Mark was a lineman and a cable splicer with New England Telephone working with the company throughout many changes and mergers into what is now known as Verizon. He had enduring strength and resilience against the harsh Vermont winters having to work atop telephone poles and splicing underground cables regardless of the seasonal conditions. After three and a half decades of dedicated service, he retired, but the allure of climbing proved irresistible. Even at the ripe age of 80, he could still be found perched atop a ladder in his backyard, demonstrating the enduring spirit that had defined his career and his life.
After retirement Mark and Charlotte did some traveling around the United States. They relocated to Florida in 1997. Mark’s love for music, particularly country classics and Charlotte's heartfelt songs, filled him with immense joy. Charlotte was a very gifted writer and nobody knew that better than Mark. The tapes that held Charlotte's musical creations became more than mere possessions; they were treasured artifacts, played until they could no longer endure the ceaseless spinning. A profound moment arrived in 2016 when his 7th great-grandchild, Lucas, entered the world on the very day Marcus turned 85. This serendipitous event ignited a renewed sense of fulfillment and purpose within Marcus. He cherished the opportunity to impart his legacy to the youngest members of his family, sharing tales of resilience, empathy, unwavering work ethic, steadfast integrity, and the transformative power of music and love. These values, woven into the fabric of his life, will continue to inspire generations to come.
In 2022, Mark experienced a resurgence of pride as his eldest great grandson, Joshua (JJ) Cutler, joined the family's hallowed profession as a fourth-generation lineman, continuing a lineage of honor and unwavering service that has been the cornerstone of their family. JJ inherits the wisdom and spirit that have cemented the Cutler family as he embarks on this honorable path. Mark’s legacy serves as a timeless reminder that a life well-lived is not measured by material wealth or worldly accolades but from the profound impact we leave on the world through our acts of kindness, compassion and the examples we set for others. His stories and singing will be missed by the staff and residents of Discovery Village at the Forum in Fort Myers. His absence will be noticed, yet his memory will continue to inspire and uplift the community he touched.
He is survived by his children Douglas Cutler, Cynthia Fuller and Annemarie Cutler. His nine grandchildren and their spouses: Matthew Cutler (Patty), Jade Cutler, Joshua Cutler (Ada) Keith Cutler (Maegan), Kristin Cutler, Bradley Campagna (Brittany), Amy Barron (Cory), Katie Campagna as well as Adam Fuller. He was blessed with nine great grandchildren: Joshua Cutler, William Cutler, Mason Cutler, Grace Cutler, Benjamin Kidder, Levi Kidder, Lucas Campagna, Noah Campagna and Ryan Campagna. He is also survived by his sister Florence Morse and her husband Elliott of East Montpelier, Vermont along with many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by Charlotte, his wife of over 60 years, who held an unyielding place in his heart. His eldest son Gary A. Cutler predeceased him in 2021. His brothers and their spouses Harold Cutler (Blanche), James Cutler (Kay), Robert Cutler (Madeline), Frank (Lundy), and Albert Cutler all predeceased him as well as two of his sisters and their spouses Marguerite Orr (Alden) and Lorraine O’Brien (William). He was also predeceased by a beloved dog, Dillan, a faithful friend for almost 20 years. Though small in stature, Dillan had left an immeasurable paw-print on his heart. Visiting hours were held privately with immediate family. A celebration of life will be held in Vermont in the summer of 2025 for both Marcus and Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Hope Hospice Development Department, 9470 Healthpark Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908 or visit MoreHope.org for detailed information on memorial donations.
