Troy “Papel” Miller, 83, of Ft. Myers, FL, passed away on February 21, 2023. Troy was born January 15, 1940, in Deport, TX to Roy and Ruby (Gibson) Miller, both of whom preceded him in death. Troy was one of five children, and he is survived by his sister Dorothy Rose (Soldotna, AK). He was preceded in death by his brothers Loy Miller and Herman Miller, as well as his younger sister Gail McKnight. Troy was a Texas native, where he graduated from Dallas’ Crozier Tech High School and received his college degree in History from the University of Dallas. He was an athlete in the university’s baseball and basketball programs and was inducted into the University of Dallas Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.
It was this love of athletics that inspired Troy to become a teacher and a coach for both football and baseball, where he had a long and successful career, working with and inspiring young adults in the DFW area to not only athletic success but life successes through courage, hard work and determination. He was an assistant coach at Zumwalt Middle School, Kimball High School, and Bryan Adams High School. He was Head Coach at Seagoville High School, Woodrow Wilson High School, Rockwall High School, West Mesquite High School, Newman Smith High School, First Baptist Dallas Academy & Grace Prep Academy. Troy had many successes during his coaching career, but one of his greatest achievements was leading the Rockwall Yellow Jackets to play in the 4A Texas State Championship football game in 1987.
Troy would say that the greatest joy in his life was marrying Nita (Curtis) Miller in 1960. Troy and Nita were married for 51 years, until her passing in 2011. Troy deeply loved his family and was a caring husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He is survived by his three children: Michael (Greenville, SC), Cheryl (Goodyear, AZ), and David (Lehigh Acres, FL) and their spouses Vicki, Alison and Tamar. He is also survived by his six grandsons: Travis (Austin, TX), Taylor and his spouse Kelsey and their daughter Eden (Iowa City, IA), Tim (New York City, NY), Tristan (Dallas, TX), Anthony (Orlando, FL), and Carson (Lehigh Acres, FL).
Troy came to faith in Jesus Christ as a teenager. While playing in a championship pee-wee football game in the state of Florida, he and his teammates attended a Fellowship of Christian Athletes banquet where Troy heard the Gospel, turned from his sin and placed his trust in Christ alone to save him. From that point on, his faith guided his life and impacted his family. He will be missed deeply by so many.
