His final tour of duty and proudest achievement prior to his retirement from the United States Air Force was serving at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington DC in the Jet Star fleet attached to Air Force One in 1963 until the early 1970s.
After retirement to Vero Beach FL, he began a new chapter and second career, becoming a pilot instructor and for many years as a Designated Pilot Examiner for the Federal Aviation Administration.
He was a lifelong Catholic and member of St. Helen's Catholic Church in Vero Beach FL.
He is survived by their "daughter" Connie Gaskins (Billy) of Leesburg GA, and through his marriage, a grandson Jason (Cindy) Gaskins and two great-grandchildren Kaitlyn and Tanner, as well as many special nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his wife Betty, a great-grandson, William Jason Gaskins, as well as brothers Dennis, Phillip and Joseph McColgan and his sister Marie McColgan Callahan Grove.
