Bertha was always a great person to have in your corner at school !  In the community she always spoke to you and was so friendly. She will be missed.

My sincere sympathy , she looked so happy the last time I saw her, enjoyed her time with THE GIRLS.

Lindy and Betty, Joe and Gerald, David, Brittany, Nicole and Bryan -- I am so sad that weather keeps me away.  I can hear Aunty Ber commenting on the -40 degree temperature that is today!  Aunty Ber -- and you girls -- were pillars of my childhood.  I miss you all.  I'm holding you in my heart. Much love to you all -- let's gather together soon and share our stories in person.

Aunty Ber was one of the last of a generation that grew up in the Depression and struggle of the 1930's.  Maybe that helped to make her so easy-going and unflappable; always happy with the smallest of things. 
 
My first memory of Aunty Ber was in the kitchen at the old farmhouse near Balcarres.  They were plucking chickens and she was covered with feathers  when I peeked in she gently but firmly shooed me out, an unrecognisable but affectionate downy white figure, and I was convinced she was Mother Goose from my nursery rhyme book, come to life. 
 
She really was a Mother and mentor figure for not just her own children and myself and my brother but my Mum,Vi, as well.  In our first years on the farm Aunty Ber was always there in the background, packing up tailgate picnics for the men in the field, picking berries, and teaching Mum how to make jams and pickles.  My recipe box is brimming with recipes in my Mum's handwriting with from Aunty Ber neatly added in the corner. 
 
The little house on Lily Street, like the little office in Balcarres school, was always a safe sanctuary because Aunty Ber was there.  From elementary school right through my Grade 12 year, I used to pretend I needed to use the bathroom so I could sneak out of class and go down to Aunty Ber's office where I would be hugged, scolded, and sent back to class. 
 
Aunty Ber was the definition of decent and kind.  In all the years I spent curled up in corners, listening to her and Mum chat while they worked, I don't remember her ever taking delight in nasty gossip.  She was the rare kind of person who firmly sees only the best in everyone  for better or for worse.  Years beyond my childhood, when my own children were babies, she came to visit us in Edmonton.  Our guest room was off of the large studio space in our basement, which I used for my work teaching movement and anatomy. When bedtime came on the first evening gentle little Aunty Ber turned into a bit of a spitfire, flatly refusing to go downstairs.  When I asked why, she said she could not walk past the teaching skeleton I kept in the studio in the dark.  As my husband roared with laughter, I scooted downstairs to put the skeleton away.  Aunty Ber cautiously followed, then, seeing I had cleared everything away, moved briskly to her room.  That's better, she said approvingly.  Skeletons are best kept in the closet.
 
Bertha May Charnock was a true and loyal friend, daughter, wife, sister, mother, and aunt.  She was the salt of the earth, and life will be lacking something without her.  Dearest Aunty Ber, I hope the garden you are walking in now is filled with bounty and bouquets and the laughter of old friends.  Rest there in peace.

To the Family of the late Mrs. Bertha Charnock; I met Bertha years ago while working in Balcarres Clinic for the Eye Doctors. My... what a wonderful, gracious & beautiful person she was. And what an honor it was to serve Bertha with her optical & vision needs. Sorry for your loss, Heaven has gain one beautiful angel. My thoughts & prayers to all.

Our mom, Dorothy Betteridge who passed away in 2010 always enjoyed chatting and catching up on the news  with your mom on the phone. Bertha was one of the very few links left on mom's father's (David Charnock) side so her friendship was truly appreciated by mom.
