Walter Michael Oleksyn

On Friday, April 12, 2013, Walter Michael Oleksyn, Fort Qu’Appelle, SK., died at the age of 76 years. The funeral service will be held in St. Andrew’s United Church, Fort Qu’Appelle, SK., on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Sharron Bodnaryk officiating. Cremation with interment in Lakeview Cemetery. Born in Meacham, Saskatchewan. Eldest son of Michael Oleksyn and Pauline (Soroka). He is survived by his wife of 49 years Gladys and children Darren Oleksyn (Terri Peters), Calgary; daughters Patricia (Terry) Lawrence, Taylor and Dax, Nipawin; and Diane (Jeff) Friesen, Mason and Avery, Regina. His brothers Allan (Carol) Oleksyn, Humboldt and Gary (Lorraine) Oleksyn of Melville. Sister-in-law Joan (John) Radwell, Katepwa, John (Jo-Anne) Heggie, Leross and Robert (Cres) Heggie, Leross. He was predeceased by his parents Michael (2002), Pauline (1974) and Gladys’ parents Thomas (1984) and Violetta Heggie (1994). Walter was raised and attended school in Meacham area followed by Teachers College at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. He taught for three years in country schools, moving to Kelliher in 1960 teaching Grade 8. After a year or two of Grade 8 he taught English in Grade 10, 11 and 12 until he retired in 1986. Following retirement he spent the next 16 years as a hail inspector for Municipal Hail and 10 years as the Manager of Kelliher Housing Authority. He was an avid golfer, bridge player and fisherman. He served on the Arena Building Committee, Golf Club executive, Lions Club and museum boards in Kelliher and Fort Qu’Appelle. Moving to Fort Qu’Appelle in 2005 was truly retirement, no more lawns to mow or snow to blow. His hobbies became reading – especially historical works concerning the Carlton Trail and playing bridge. He was a lover of Shakespeare, live theatre productions and travel.
