Born in Liskeard, Cornwall, on August 8, 1932, he spent his boyhood in Plymouth during the blitz. He left England after the war, going to sea as a steam engineer aboard a merchant ship. Five years later he walked ashore at Halifax, Nova Scotia, to marry Una and begin a new career as a draftsman.
He felt his biggest accomplishment was his family. He treasured his long, successful marriage to Una, and was proud of her career. He was also proud of the success of his two boys, Dave and Derek not only in their educational accomplishments and careers, but their maturity, kindness and the success of their own marriages including two wonderful daughter-in-laws Alexandra and Clarizze and three talented grandchildren Stuart, Evan and Martin.
He always felt education was important, and took full advantage of every opportunity first in England and then in Canada. He early realized the impact of good teachers, who cared for their students and the long range effect they have on your life.
He learned to enjoy reading early, an interest he kept for the rest of his life. His hobbies were important to him, something he also passed on to his family. He taught us patience, spending months building a model car, boat, bird or airplane. His longest project took five years.
His professional career went further than he ever expected. Transferring to the drafting office at Imperial Oil's new Redwater Fertilizer Complex in 1969, he soon moved into project management work and eventually became Safety Manager before retiring in 1992.
He volunteered throughout his life, helping establish the Fort Saskatchewan museum and joining the Fort Saskatchewan Centennial Committee, the Alberta Senior Games and most lately with the Fort Saskatchewan Foundation Board.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, July 8, at the Lions Mane Room of the Dow Centennial Centre starting at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, he has asked that donations be made to the Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital Foundation.
Arrangements entrusted to First Memorial Riverview Chapel, 11090 86 Avenue, Fort Saskatchewan, AB 780-998-9898
