Alfred "Al" C. Sass

Al Sass, 90, of Fort Smith died March 13, 2014 at home in Fort Smith. Al was a man of integrity who reflected the love of Christ in the way he served others with his time, talent and treasure. He was born April 10, 1923 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to August Heinrich and Ethel Grace Collier Sass. He attended Fort Smith High School and played basketball for Fort Smith Junior College. Before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943 he worked for the Fort Smith Newspaper in the Press Room. His military service was with the 100th Infantry Division in France where he was wounded and received two purple hearts and two bronze stars. He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas Law School and worked for the Treasury Department as an Estate & Gift Tax Attorney until his retirement in 1989. He married Ila Horne in 1955 and began a long legacy of love for family and the community that surrounded him, volunteering for many organizations like the Clearing House and Habitat for Humanity, Friends of the Library, and Mercy Hospital. Al walked closely with the Lord and helped start Westminster Presbyterian Church of Fort Smith and later in life was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Gleaners Sunday School Class. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Ila of the Home; four daughters, Terry & husband Mike Morledge of Little Rock, AR., Lisa Robinson of Van Buren, Tracy & husband Gary Keifer of Fort Smith, and Lori & husband Brian Poppe of Conway, AR; eleven grandchildren, Joshua Keifer, Sarah Keifer, Heather Lapp, Claire Morledge, Laura Morledge, Molly Barber, Aaron Robinson, Jacob Robinson, Caleb Poppe, Rachel Poppe, and Robert Poppe; and four great grandchildren. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the loving care, received from Mary Newman and Mandy Webb. Memorial service will be Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 1:00 PM in the Roebuck Chapel of First United Methodist Church under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home. Private burial will be in the U.S. National Cemetery of Fort Smith. The family will greet friends following the memorial in the Narthex of First United Methodist Church.
