

Mary Wright Hammack, age 83, formerly of Fort Smith, passed away September 14, 2011 in Franklin, TN. She was a retired Registered Nurse, having spent 28 years as an instructor with the LPN nursing programs in Arkansas. She started the LPN School in Harrison, AR, in 1959 and the Salem, AR program in 1963. Later she was transferred to the Forrest City, AR LPN program before moving to Fort Smith in 1966. There, Mrs. Hammack, worked with the Sparks School of Nursing for several months before resuming the role of LPN instructor with the Fort Smith Practical Nurse School #1. In 1969, this school and faculty were transferred to the Westark Community College campus where Mrs. Hammack remained until her retirement in December, 1987. She received her R.N. degree from Hillcrest Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Tulsa, in 1952. She also received a B.S. degree from College of the Ozarks, in 1978.
She was a member of the Hillcrest United Methodist Church in Nashville, TN.
Mrs. Hammack was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Hammack. She is survived by daughters Karen (Bob) Nolte and Judith (Doug) Widenmann, both of Brentwood, TN, her grandchildren Chris and Alex Nolte and Erin and Blake Widenmann, and sister the late Mabel Nelson of Lebanon, MO.
Funeral services will be held at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel, Fort Smith, on Friday, September 23, 2011. Visitation will begin at 12:00 pm followed by the service at 1:00 PM. Burial will be in Fort Smith National Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bob, Christopher and Alex Nolte and Doug, Erin and Blake Widenmann.
